I actually think the old seat did not split; they were made that way in 2 pieces. The MC replacement is a single piece. Toyota may have redesigned since but that is the way they came from the factory. Mine was the same. I had the same problem until I realized there was plastic left in there. The silly thing looked like metal.

I put a MC shift seat in my earlier Toyota truck, and couldn't feel any improvement.
For my current '97, the original OEM seat was fine at 17 years and 140K miles. Swapped a new OEM one in as a precaution.

My '97 has over 270,000 miles on it. The shift seat was not broken like I have read from others online. In fact, it is in good condition. The piece does feel softer than the replacement. I do notice a "less soft" engagement. I prefer the feel of the new shift seat.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit, I'm pretty sure you are right. At first, I didn't take the lower rubber washer out. I am pedantic. If the instructions say "remove the shift seat", I will not touch anything else. It's a quality that gets me into trouble sometimes

Get the LCE short throw kit, it replaces all the wear parts and feels way better than the stock w59 setup.

It actually makes the stock shifter about an inch taller in height, so it leveled it out for me.
