Shifting down

I just bought my first Toyota 4runner yesterday and I absolutly love it.

I have a question about how the transmission works.

No martter what gear it is in when I let off the gas is seems to either down shift or use engine breaking but it slows down. I'm used to the cars I have had in the past just free wheeling.

I really like this feature it seems to give me more control over the car but I just dont understand what is going on because I know nothing about these cars.

It has the down hill assist but it's not engaged.

The car is a 06 w/ an automatic transmission 14,000mi.

Your Toyota has 'hill grade logic'. If your going down hill you'll really notice it. During flatland driving I notice mine engine braking somewhat. It seems to keep the converter locked in fifth and use the ngine to slow the vehicle; just like in a standard shift and letting off of the gas pedal in 5th or 6th.

I'm just not used to when letting off the throttle the car either shifts down of it has engine braking that just slows it down. I really think it shifts down right away upon letting off the throttle because when you get back on it again it seems to shift again.

Mine doesn't do that. That's not normal transmission behavior. I manually shift back to 4th and sometimes 3d to gently scrub speed. It doesn't do it if left in 5th.

HOw fast are we talking about? 65 to 50 in 5 seconds?

I don't know if it's down shifting or just deccelerating.

I'm going to time it at different speeds and monitor it more closely and give you guys a report.

Try downshifting the transmission manually a few times to get used to that feel. It will give you a baseline.

Just watch the tach. If it bumps up, it's downshifted. It should drop to idle RPM and stay there until you give it gas again.
They DO slow down quicker than most due to the brick-like aerodynamics of the truck.
As suggested, shift it down manually (watch the tack when you do it) for comparison.
