Recently I've had some problems with my '97 5-speed 4R where I couldn't shift it into most gears (or any gear sometimes). Earlier this week I got stuck mid-K-turn on a narrow street and spend 10 minutes trying to get the car into reverse. I called up Toyota and they confirmed that they had replaced both the clutch and the master cylinder back in September. My go-to car guy friend insisted it was probably low transmission fluid. I spent another long amount of time looking under the hood for the dipstick to check transmission fluid before finding these forums and confirming that there is no dipstick, but plugs (or something like that).
Unfortunately, I'm at school, and even though that's close to home, it's tough to find time to get home so my parents were nice enough to bring the car to Toyota for me. Unfortunately they don't ask for any details and just pay for whatever is on the bill (thankfully we've never had a reason not to trust them in these past 18 years) I got word today from my mom that the transmission fluid was not low and "something was loose"...possibly something with the clutch.
Luckily there was no charge, but I'm just curious if anyone can figure out what my have been loose and what may have caused it? I share my 4R with my parents now, but if I don't end up at law school in a city, it's my graduation present, so I want to start learning more about it and taking better care of it in case that does happen.
