Shifting when cold

Hi all,

When I start driving, and the 4 Runner gets into second gear, it seems like it stays in second for a while, if I accelerate faster it eventually will shift into third. This only happens when I start it and it is really cold (usually within the first 5 mins). Now is this common on these ? Ive only had the pleasure of owning this since September.

Yes this is normal. I don't like it at all so I try to let the engine warm up for at least a few minutes before driving it.

I have the 5speed stick and when its super cold I can't get it into any gear. Once I let it warm up its fine

same thing happens to me... rpms go up to about 3..but after 5 minutes of driving its fine..

The transmission will not shift to OD until it is warmed up. It holds the lower gear longer to warm up the transmission faster and because there is less "strain" on a lower gear.

It protects itself from those people that hop in their cold car and speed off.
