shock boots?

I'm considering putting some boots on my king 2.5 rears to minimise damage from gravel roads. Looking for some recommendations, or some points to consider.

Also considering shin guards or roost guards for the same application.


Anyone have any experience with these they'd care to share? Waste of time and money?

I have heard bad things about boots for people who have to deal with rust. They end up holding water and will rust out the shafts which will destroy the seals and make them leak.

I would say run the boots. Most boots have holes to drain any water out but that is something you should check after going through deep water/mud. It is worth it to try and protect the shock shaft from nicks.

I appreciate the input very much guys. These are the two strong arguments I've encountered.

I've ordered 2 pair of boots,

One clear. Hopefully clear enough to see if there's debris inside. If there's not a drainage hole, I'll make one.

The other is black. This is the plan "B" set of boots, and I plan to split them top to bottom with scissors, and zip tie them on the shock body and close to the mount. They will be easy to inspect and clean inside of. I'll have the split facing the rear of the vehicle, so that I can still avoid nicks and pitting from gravel kicked up by the front wheels. This is my primary concern.

They might wind up looking like sh!t and holding more stuff than they protect from... at which case I'll make a decision.

late to this, but i installed shin guards when i did my ICON rears and, after the fact, considered adding boots too. i bought a set and planned to install them when i rotated my tires next, but truthfully the rear shafts were in such great shape that i didn't bother putting them on. they've been holding up well since, as well.
