Shock compatibility

I've been looking at getting new shocks for my 4th gen 4Runner (stock ride height). What I've noticed is that there seem to be a lot more choices (aftermarket) for the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma. Now, from what I've seen the suspension setup on these are similar to the 4Runner. Is it possible to use the shocks from an FJ Cruiser or Tacoma on an unlifted 4Runner? For example: Edelbrock lists their VS-3 shocks for the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser, but nothing for the 4Runner. Even more interesting, there are two different part numbers for the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser. So, if I were to use the listing for the FJ Cruiser on the 4Runner, I know it would mount up okay, but am I going to run into a length issue (too long), etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

FJC and T4R will work, no problem. Not sure about Taco, I am pretty sure the rear would be different. I'd guess the front would probably work.:cheers:
 
If you're worried about shock extension and compression, then you should just look at the specs on the shocks you're considering and compare them to the OEM shocks specs.

Keep in mind that shocks don't play a role in the vehicle's ride height. That's a function of the springs only. So if you're keeping the stock springs and ride height, just make sure the shocks you choose allow full extension/compression as compared to the OEM units. I would think that aftermarket shocks spec'd for the FJ Cruiser would work just fine in your 4Runner.
 
Well, I haven't been able to find decent figures for the shock length on most of these -- they simply go by application and thus far its been a REAL pain to find the actual numbers. And I know the shocks have nothing to do with the ride height. My concern was finding a pair that will work with the 4Runner's suspension as its normal ride height might be different than that of the Taco or the FJ Cruiser.
