Shocks for a comfortable ride in town

My wife asked why the truck rides so rough around town when we hit pot holes and rough road, I tell her it's a truck and it's supposed to be like that.

If I wanted to change out the shocks to have a better ride, what would be the best way to go? I don't ever plan on rock climbing or hitting the trials, but just riding around town and having a comfortable ride. What would be the best shocks and springs to get to take the rough Tampa roads and still have a comfortable ride?

I would go with stock replacements from the dealer. I looked them up a while back and they aren't overpriced, surprisingly.

My KYB Monomax shocks are very stiff, so you probably wouldn't want those.

Bilstein 4600s. Totally worth it. If you're on the original suspension at 236K, I'd replace them.

Mine were at 217k and I replaced them last week. It rides so smooth now, something I really wasn't expecting given that most body on frame platforms have a stiffer ride.

Can I ask what part #s you got for shocks? Mine rides rough as S**t with Bilstien HDs. And over 50,000 Km on them so far. What springs are you running? I've got the 99 talls front with OME 2906 rears.

Thanks for the info, I'll certainly check them out. I'll compare the OEM with the ones suggested and see what I can afford.

I'd just like a smooth ride that can handle the bumps and holes in the roads and not throw us around.

I had the Bilstein 4600s on my stock 02 and really liked them.

I agree with oem. Your being thrown around because the suspension is shot. New 99 coils and oem shocks would make it ride new again.

Ok, so I'm a newbie when it comes to coils, what are 99 coils? Is that the year or a description?

Yes sorry, OEM 99's are best option for best ride. They are also the tallest of the years. 99 talls is what they call them and matched with some good aftermarket shocks will ride good but not like stock.

The OEM rear shocks are $37 each I think from Camelback Toyota. For $80.00 (shipping) your rig will ride a lot better.

Like others said, new coils will made it ride like a dream. And still very capable off road.

The front struts and coils are a lot more expensive though

So new rear OEM shocks and 99 coils will help improve the ride and give it another inch of height? That would be great since it seems to sit low in the back and would like another 1 inch of lift.

Does that sound right?

Yup, you got it. You'll probably gain over an inch though, since your old coils are worn out and compressed. Probably will gain 2-3 inches when it's all said and done. Chances are though, it'll look like it's leaning forward since you'll still have the old coils and struts in the front.

Thanks for the help, but then I'll have to get new coils and struts for the front to even it out. I guess I should just get OEM shocks and coils (2001) for the rear so it won't raise the back so much that I'll have to spend $300 on the front. I'm trying to work on a budget as most of us are.

Fronts: 24-187244
Rears: 24-024518

I'm running original '01 springs. I'm debating on throwing on the OEM '99 talls for the rear. I'd like a slight amount of rake.
