I know a lot has been covered on shocks. That said I'm debating buying some of the fronts that come as a new unit. Shock, spring etc all assembled and ready to install. Usually by the time you take it apart and buy all of the hardware you end up with everything but a new spring. Anybody go this route and if so what brand did you use.

I've been tempted as well whenever I end up replacing my struts but the problem is that the only ones I've found are not up to par with OEM quality. Seems like the consensus is that it's worth it to just buy quality shocks like KYB's, OEM Tokico's or trekmasters, or Bilsteins. What you spend in a compressor or installation will be made up for by longer lasting struts. Sorry I don't have any first hand experience.

That's one issue. The other is that the 3rd Gens varied greatly in ride height, from the tallest in '99 to the lowest in '00-'02 after the Exploder rollover scare. As far as I know, the all-in-ones only make one height, so unless you are putting the matching springs in the rear, you may end up with a weird rake--if you only do the front.
I have read of that, too, especially with the Monroe quickstruts. It seems you'd have to have 99 talls in the rear and possibly spacers for an even drop, but a free lift up front may be welcomed to some people? For what it's worth, my truck came with some new Monroe's in the back. I would've never bought them, they're super soft and I bounce on big bumps and dips but they're just stiff enough to prevent it from hitting the bumpstops so I don't get the thud lots of old runners have so I haven't bothered to change them.
