I was thinking of replacing my stock shock absorbers on my 2000 T4R 2WD, but I have no idea what to use.

I don't want to get any air type, but then are the air type any good? I'm mostly concerned with ending up with a good stable ride, good cornering and such. The stock shocks seems spongy to me. I'm hoping someone could suggest a good reliable brand. Thanks

Thanks for the input! I already read up on the ome and biltsteins and they do seem to be the most popular. I am not really interested in lifting my Tr4, since it's only a 2wd and runs only on the streets.

Along with replacing the shocks, do you think sway bars are a good investment to smooth out the ride? I've heard about Addco bars... any others you would recommend?

I don't know much about sway bars.
I don't think you will really need em.

As for the shocks, I had to replace my factory Toyota front struts after 49,ooo miles, they started squeaking. :-)

I replace them with OME Firm shocks and also replaced my factory springs. Now I sit taller :-) As you can tell on my sig pic on the left. Hahahaha.

I added the bils on mine and love them. It's a much more taught ride, and handles much better. Stay away from the sway bars, because I think it's makes it too stiff over bumps.

does anyone have the link to OME? i have read good things about their springs. if the $$ isn't bad, i am thinking about doing them. they raise the rear by about an inch, right?
 
What about KYB Monomax shocks???? I just ordered those and now I feel like I should have found this forum like 2 days earlier cause I was about to get bilsteins, but decided to go with the monomax one's. They were the same price so it's not like it would have been a problem to get the bils :( I'm not looking for much more performance, my stock one's are just old and need replacing so I went with these. It would be nice for them to be better than stock though....
 
not sure about the KYB's. i have heard of people using them, and i don't recall hearing anything negative. perhaps it comes down to the warranty? my attitude is...a known quality product, plus lifetime guarantee, plus! a part that is "stock" on some toyota's already (the trd packages) means that it is a pretty good product. bilsteins are also factory on chevy z71's. if that help you relate them to performance.
 
Anti-roll bars (not sway bars) could make your ride slightly rougher, yet not really noticable. If you notice any excess body roll that your truck exhibits, bigger bars will reduce it.

The funny thing is that on my 2000 Limited, I notice very little body roll and the stock rear anti-roll bars seem smalll for the truck. On my Civic, I use a 22mm rear bar which is huge in comparison.
 
I have a 2WD 4runner, i changed my shocks at some local sears that are just like my OEM shocks. Should i do anything to my front? cause it has struts instead. Man, i wish i had some bilsten shocks instead...hah.
 
Ok, so I am ready for new shocks,thinking about the bilsteins but cant find a local dealer that installs, them so I am forced to buy online then pay a shop to install. There are lots of local rancho dealers around, I found the Rancho RS5000 on sale for 39. w/ free instal, however I heard that the RS5000 is a pretty stiff shock, anyone have any other advice before i buy a set?
 
i just received my bisltein's in the mail today. bought online for $282 deliverred, and they are the heavier aftermarket ones. that was for all 4 by the way. 98 4runner, 4x4. i think it is going to cost me about $75 to have them installed. i have felt the ride, and i enjoy the stiffer, yet much more controlled feel. after all...the 4runner is a TRUCK! you can't expect a car like ride out of them. just something to keep in mind.
 
What store is installing them for you, I am use to trucks so the hard ride is not an issue. I just dont want to buy a shock that has a harder ride than it should have, caused by buying a cheaper shock.
 
haha...well let me tell you, bilsteins are anything but a cheaper product! after all, trd used them. enough said. i am just going over the the monroe shop a little ways down the road. anyone should be able to do it. the rears are two bolts (one being a blind one), and the fronts need a spring compressor (which is why i am saying the hell with it and having someone do it for me). honestly, i paid $60 when i replaced factory with factory. but i have moved, so i am expecting to pay a little more for the work around here. def. under a hundred will get them installed. just use your instinct. if you don't like the look or the "feel" of the shop or the mechanics, then don't go there.
