short YT clip (Power Steering Pump Belt adjustment) *Solved*

Just updating this thread in case any future searcher needs to quickly adjust the tension on PS pump belt. I read a few threads here and people were pulling the top radiator hose because it's a PITA to get to the adjuster bolt. Just wanted to add that it can be done without removing anything using something like this cheap stubby 6-point 14mm ratcheting wrench:



The adjuster bolt was very loose and took several full turns increase tension on the belt. The cacophony of whistles, squeals and straining/groaning disappeared to my relief. I sometimes overthink these things and need to remember it's a Toyota 4Runner.

Hard to pinpoint since it only happens while rolling above 10 MPH or so.....getting louder over the last couple months and is now constant and is turning heads. Previously was intermittent.

Thank you. That was my first thought. I did check the tension (unscientifically) and wasted a can of 'belt dressing' junk just to see if it made a difference.....I will loosen and re-tension. No squeal at any RPM when not in motion had me concerned.

It should have made a difference in the noise after putting on belt dressing. Did you spray the AC belt as well? Could also be the pulleys them selves. Remove the belts one at a time. It could also be the idler fan pulley.

I don't use any tool when tightening the belt from the PSP bottom adjuster. Turning the adjuster bolt by hand AND lightly pushing the pump as to increase the tension of the belt gives the tensioner bolt slack and from there I can turn the bolt head to tighten the belt. I think this just works for the PSP but for the alternator and A/C belt, tools can be used.

By hand? That’s hardcore. I usually have to use my teeth to break these nuts loose.

Oh no, when all the other bolts are broke loose so it can swing LOL.
