Should Airbags and Wearing Seatbelts be Mandatory?

Just as the title says:

I feel neither should be mandatory, as it is my choice to wear the belt, and to buy a vehicle that is not equipped with an airbag. It's not the Governments place to tell me what i can and can't do... But this isnt to say i reccomend not wearing seatbelts, just that i dont think it should be forced down our throats. And requiring airbags have killed off some cool cars.

i agree about the airbags for sure but i would think some kind of belt should be warn even if its just the waist

I was in a wreck a few years ago on the interstate going 75 mph. I was in my QX4 (which was totalled). The woman in front of me lost control while we were in a construction zone with concrete barriers on either side of the road, so no swerving off into the grass to miss her. I nailed her old beater pontiac right on the gas-cap and my heavy SUV drove went up on two wheels (on the passenger side). It was a hell of an impact. If I wasn't bucked up, I would have been so jarred by the impact, I wouldn't have been able to set it back down on all four's. I would have flipped several times and gone directly over the barriers into oncoming traffic from the other direction. My rule used to be to only buckle up on the interstate, but now it is to buckle up before I leave the driveway. By the way, airbag never deployed. It must have been faulty. I think it's non-deployment and my buckling up saved my life. Those are just my thoughts.

i understand where youre coming from, but i see a different point of view. i feel the requirements are more for those that have no choice, ie children. i am not going to let a 5 year old decide wether or not to wear a seat belt kind of thing.

but if you are the only one in the vehicle i feel it should be your own choice.

its just like at my work they created a no smoking on the premise rule (even in smoking areas)... which is bull. it is not their decision if i want to kill my lungs or not. and yes this is off the clock, on my lunch, away from everyone.

i feel we should all have our own say in our own lives.

This thread reminds me of this article below. A motorcyclist involved in a protest about mandatory wearing of helmets hits his head and dies during said protest. I understand freedom of choice and all but really - some things are no brainers. It's kind of semantic to make arguments about freedom of choice in such circumstances - it's not like they are limiting your colour choice or saying you can't have beefy off road tires.. With the millions of cars on the road there's no sense in leaving such things to chance when there isn't a good reason not to wear it.

I agree with Boot - you don't wear your belt - you forfeit your insurance... The problem is - a hospital has to treat an injured person - in the absence of insurance - or forfeiting it - The state and taxpayer will ultimately pay for someones poor decisions so yes I believe they should be mandatory. Your freedom to make poor safety decisions or freedom of the taxpayers wallet?? taxpayers win.. Belt up!

Motorcyclist in Helmet Protest Hits Head and Dies

I completley understand the whole safety thing about them, and what i thought was fair was that minors had to wear them, and others could choose. What got me thinking about this is that here in CT motorcycle helmets are not required, and i was wondering if a major piece of safety equipment wasnr required by the state for bikes, then why the hell do i need to have airbags in my car (because airbags are the main reason that the Defender was not sold here after 1997) and why must i wear a seatbelt if motorcyclists can have their choice to be safe!

Probably NOT faulty. FRONT airbags deploy when there is sufficient rate of deceleration. It looks like, in your situation, your QX was still moving forward at a good rate after hitting the lady's Pontiac.

but if you are the only one in the vehicle i feel it should be your own choice.

Unfortunately, in our society, there is a need to save people from themselves and not let Darwinism work as intended.

As for smoking, please see Beakerbox post above. Trust me, in my line of work, it really doesn't PAY to save most folks from themselves! But, you gotta do or try because i can get sued for letting ignorant folks kill themselves.

For those that choose not to wear their seatbelt and are injured their health insurance should automatically decline coverage. No reason other people should pay higher rates because others don't wear belts and will have a higher likelihood of more/severe injuries.

But, if no insurance coverage, then who will pay their care?? It all comes back to you, one way or another!!

The problem is that motocycle helmets have not been shown to do much...I THINK. (Disclaimer, i have not researched this topic...just hearing from friends.) If true, then yeah, it is debatable whether a helmet makes any difference in the grand scheme of things (aka a big wreck while on a motorcycle). Remember, a motorcycle is basically an "organ donor on wheels."

Unlike a motorcycle helmet, BOTH seatbelts and airbags in a car are PROVEN beyond doubt to save lives. Yes, there are rare stories where these things can harm, but 99% of the time, they do save lives. So, this is why some states demand motorcycle riders to wear helmets and some don't...but ALL states demand you to wear your seatbelts in a car and require manufacturers to equip cars with airbags.

I too have expierence with motorcycles, but i know i would have been pretty messed up falling off my mountain bike a few times had i not had a helmet on, i have taken chunks out of it. With that in mind i cant imagine how on a vehicle that moves quicker than a bicycle but has the same flaws and handling characteristics how a helmet couldnt be proven much safer than not having it, otherwise i dont feel these helmet companies would invest so
Much money in them. And also my father is/was an avid motorcyclist (harleys) and he said people are crazy to not wear a helmet. Thinking logically maybe if you get thrown from the bike at 60mph+ you will probably die anyway, but what if you get hit at a lower speed and hit your head first, i would imagine that a helmet would save your life/brains there instead of cracking it open like an egg...
With that being said, i dont think that helmets should be required, i just think you are a dumba$$ if you dont wear one...

(i have no problem with the discussion of whether helmets should be legal or illegall as well)

It should be required as standard equipment.

Using it should be entirely up to you. I do agree though that driver should be belted in all the time, so he's not out of the driver's seat if there is a lost of control. It's just like the helmet law for motorcycles, shouldn't be mandatory.

One should be in control of their own destiny.

Another thing i find funny, is most if not all of you fight so that children and mandated to wear them, but every day most children 90% of kids who ride the bus, i cant recall i have ever worn a seatbelt or ever seen other students wearing them on the bus, and school buses arent exempt from accidents, they may be more prove due to less braking power compared to cars, and constant stopping on main roads. Funny how belts arent enforced/mandated on government property when like it is on passenger cars, even more funny that it has to do with children!

Good point John. I never worn lap belts when I was on the school bus. Maybe because buses are big and slow????

big and slow yes, they maybe max out at 45 mph but that doesn't say much for other drivers/trains/tractor trailers. Its a bit hypocritical that busses, even new ones, SPECIFICALLY school busses don't have seatbelts or airbags of any sort.

I feel strongly that wearing a seatbelt is a good idea (and I wear mine) but it absolutely should not be required by law. I believe different folks have different opinions regarding what "laws" are for. IMO, laws are to protect the population/me from hurtful actions caused by others. Some smart people disagree and think laws are created as an effort to tell the population what they should do (as in best practices for all to follow).

The seatbelt argument clearly defines these two groups. I think we should be free to do what we want (including not wearing a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet) as long as it is not hurting anyone else. Even if it is stupid.

Airbags should be a manufactures choice. As in most things, if the buyers want airbags companies will make money selling cars with airbags (free market). I'm sure nearly all people want airbags but it should be a manufactures choice, not regulated.

The problems start when we all start paying for each other’s health insurance or other costs. If I'm paying for your health and disability insurance, I want you wearing a seatbelt because that’s how your bad decisions start affecting/hurting me.

The key here is more personal responsibility and less liability for others dumb decisions. If you want to ride around without a seatbelt fine, go ahead. I may drive around the block without one someday as well. Not a good idea, but I may choose to do so. If I crash and my hospital bill becomes your problem it gets complicated.

We'd all be surprised just how smart we are if we start thinking for ourselves. Weigh the pros and cons of wearing a seatbelt yourself and we'll make the right choice.

As far as I’m concerned, if we have a mandatory seatbelt law we should also have many more laws; like not mowing the grass in flip flops, not crossing the street while looking at a text message and not leaning over the guardrail at a baseball game.

Let’s celebrate the freedom to be stupid but exercise the personal responsibility required to stay safe.

PS-I don't have kids but I would make it my responcibility to make sure they're safe in all activities they particapate in (including riding in a car).

Hey Thai, I've been riding bikes for 18 years on the road and on the track. Good Helmets most certainly do help. I live in So Cal. It's hot - but I wear full gear - jacket, boots, gloves, spine protector, helm every single time I ride. I've been hit by two cars over the years and came out ok. There's a saying amongst sports bike enthusiasts. "Dress for the fall, not for the ride"

I do appreciate your guys points of view but I don't understand the futility of the arguments. No ones given one good reason for not wearing a belt other than, "I should have the choice because I should have the choice" It's my destiny and so on, none of which are arguments for or against the wearing of belt. It's not just your destiny - what about the people you leave behind? What if you survive and are a huge burden on the state, insurance and your family who have to change your diapers because you didn't wear a belt and went through the windshield of the car? It sounds pretty selfish to me.

Anyone.. One good legitimate reason not to wear a belt?

One good legitimate reason not to wear a belt?[/QUOTE]

There is no good reason not to wear a seatbelt. But there are good reasons not to let others make decisions for you. When others start thinking for you, you lose your ability to think for yourself. The seatbelt is one small issue that clarifies this; because people should wear seatbelts. They should also eat more fruits and vegtables but I don't want to be forced to do it.

For example, there's no legitimate reason to drink alcohol? ...but I may want to drink six beers this Saturday. Hell, maybe I'll smoke a killer cigarette too.

But both make me feel like crap the next day, so I'll choose not to. I like having free will :guitar2:

People suing companies, states and other entities/people is what makes alot of things in our lives "safer" and forced on us so we can live and still be stupid.

I was mountain bike riding and I took a fall and bounced my head off the ground and if I wasn't wearing a helmet I would have done some serious damage to my temple area but since I was wearing it I spread the impact point out and just suffered a bit of pain going around me head where the helmet sits but of course with a motorcycle speeds are generally multiple times higher and those helmets may simply allow you to have an open casket funeral.

Ok fair enough! Your point about free will is something I generally agree with you about. But it's absolutely impossible to have a society without rules! It's not about being told what to do - it's society agreeing on certain standards that make it possible for 20 million people to live in one city. At what point does free will become selfishness? - as soon as it effects other people - does not wearing a seat belt effect other people? - Yes it does - it effects my wallet... Is there an argument beyond that isn't just semantics? - I've yet to read one:D

Anyway, I'm new around here so please don't take me the wrong way - I just enjoy the banter...

Yes, it is a very interesting topic. I like to see the different opintion and appreciate being listened too.

Thanks for giving me somthing to think about this PM.

I enjoy the banter too
