Should I buy it?2004 4Runner Sport V 4wd 10k?

Hello guys,

I am located in South CA and I m interested in buying a friend s 4 Runner.

He has a 2004 4Runner Sport V8 4wd...with 140K.

We agreed on 10K.

I think it is a very good deal but I would like to have your opinions.
He changed the timing belt less than 15K ago.

Car looks brand new, not a single scratch.

My only concern...the miles.
I red a bit and I think that with proper maintenance the car can run with no probs up to 200k miles.

Please let me know your thoughts.

You should easily get more than 200,000 miles out of the 4Runner if it has been maintained properly. There's really not much in the way of maintenance either, as long as oil & filter changes have been kept up to date you should be good to go. I've seen older 4Runner go for more than 300,000 miles without any major problems.

Well to protect your 10K and your friendship I would have it professionally inspected by a Toyota Dealer that people like in your area.

Obviously it worked out O.K. but it makes me wonder if other maintenance was put off...

I'd get it inspected so you both know where you stand and there's no hard feelings later on.

I agree. And while 140k is not necessarily too big of a concern in a 4runner, thats still a lot of mi for an 04.

$10K is a good deal as long as there's no major probs (tranny, transfer case, engine, etc) and that you don't have to pay CA taxes, delivery fee, miscellaneous, etc. Plus, you know it's your friend so you know who owned it last. 140 is a lotta miles but it's Cali (gotta have 2 jobs and the distance between those are usually 20 miles apart). I average 35K miles/yr when i used to live there.

BUY it!
I bought an 03 4Runner for $11k with 140k miles last Dec.
It runs like it's new. Just have it checked out like any car you buy.

I just drove the 4runner home with me.

tomorrow i ll drive it to work and get inspected.
My friend spent today 500 dollars to change fluids/oil/etc etc at the dealer.

He kept the car in pristine condition, always serviced at the dealer and he provided me with all the paperworks.

he does not have one scratch...literally.

it has lot of miles because his commute was long...but all freeway miles.

i checked KBB, edmonds...and 10K looks like a friend's price...really.

i m not buying it for myself, it is a gift for my GF...and guess where my GF lives?

now the question would be...should i ship it?or should i drive it through Nevada, Utah, wyoming, South Dakota and finally reach MN?

I ll keep you posted but i m positive that i will end up buying.

Minnesota...what a great place. Not that I'm biased or anything.

Personally, I've never shipped a car and am apprehensive about doing so. I think it makes for the perfect excuse to take a road trip.

The great thing about getting a older 4Runner with many miles on it, is that it is from southern CA. I suspect a car like that up in MN would have a harder life and more rust. It would be a good idea to bring it up to MN, of course getting there might be a problem, but I think it would be worth the exspense of the trip.

the only thing I have to shop for...new tires.

I will go on tire rack and see what they have.
I am also reading other posts regarding tires :lol:

and yes I think that a CA car, no rust, not one scratch, will do good in MN.
From my house exactly 1980 miles.

I envy. I've been looking all summer for a Sport at that price, you got a good deal. I've got several '03s with that mileage and price I'm looking at, one with lower miles I'm negotiating on.

There's a bit of noise at speed, not terrible. He may have the crossbars on the roof rack further forward which would make for more wind noise.

I can't say about yours, but on mine there are stickers that tell you where to put the crossbars to minimize wind noise. I'm not sure what model year they started doing that though. Whatever is mounted to the rack will definitely create some wind noise too.
