Should I buy this 1995 4runner?

So, I have been looking at a 4runner for some time now. I found one that is pretty cheap but per the ad says it needs some work.

I called the seller and he said the engine is ticking. He mentioned he daily drives this car and it runs great. He also said that a toyota dealer said the all the engines in this style 4runner are noisy and tick.

So, What do you think? Would it be worth $2200?

Are they all "noisy" like the seller claims?

How much would a new engine or engine rebuild cost (ball park) if I had a shop do it?



1995 Toyota 4Runner 4X4
low mi. for year 125000 (daily driver)
good glass, after market cd player (usb port), moon roof, power windows/locks

a few dings and dents but almost no rust, faded paint, power antenna not working (radio still picks up stations), rear wiper not working properly

engine could use some work, but I drive it daily. small power steering leak (but I put in a few oz once a month or so)

Iner, pics inside and out or more info could make or break the deal. To me, a tick is much easier to deal with than a knock, 125k on a '95 is very generous imo. If he'd take $2k cash and the overall appearance was there, i'd be all over it. On my current project, i have a combined $2300 from buying a 4runner w/ a blown HG, bought a wrecked 4rnr w/ a good motor, currently tweaking and dressing it.

I pull up Craigslist to see what $2300 will get me in 4runners locally and there ain't much good i see in that price range, which makes me feel pretty good about my commitment to my project.

I'd love to see some pics before telling you to go go go .....just a small tidbit, the non working rear wiper, i just fixed the same thing on mine, was a broken piece of plastic assembly. Almost no rust means alot too.

Outside looks good. from what i can tell and the owner says the interior is a 8/10 for the age.

Heat works but AC is weak (im ok with that)

Says the engine is dirty. (it is an engine after all)

From what it sounds like buying this and having maintenance done could make this a good daily. Getting fluids changed, belts if needed and suspension if original.

Appearance looks solid, a peek underneath to make sure the entire frame isn't rusting through itself wouldn't hurt. Good luck, go drive it & let us know what you decided !!!
