Should I buy

I was online browsing through 4runners because I want one as a first vehicle, and I found a 1988 22re 4runner with 425000kms on it, for only $400. My only concern is that the description states that it "has no power when cold or on hills" which I assume means the transmission is slipping.
So my question is, should I buy this 4runner despite the issues, and how much would it cost to fix?

If the body is straight and the interior is clean, $400 is a deal even if the entire powertrain is completely missing.

Is it an auto or a manual?

It was an automatic, I was too late though, it just sold, but my neighbour has a 1st gen that I've been in love with since I first saw it, he doesnt drive it that often but is always working on it, I might ask him if he'd sell that and jump on it of the price is right

Could have been as simple as a clogged cat conv.
For $400 and running (somewhat) it'd be worth it for parts.
