should i do the trade for a V8?

OK so have currently a 06' 4runner sports 4x4 V6, and a buddy of mine has the same in a V8. he wants to trade, should i yes or no? i want to know if it will be worth it. in the long run. there both stock still. for now until i get a bike it will be my daily driver and hard core runner. i don't do long commutes so that's not a worry, i just don't like paying for gas. so tell me the ups and downs of both, and help me make my decision. eventually this will be my almost full time off road. but street legal of course.

The V8 is a very reliable engine from what I can gather and the difference in fuel mileage is not much. I enjoy having the extra power and torque and believe that it the stresses vehicle less when under load. Just me 2 cents. I got the v8 from the get go and haven't reverted it one bit.

Yes you should trade, I have had both a 2003 Sport Edition V6 and now I have a 2004 Limited V8, gas mileage isn't much different, but the torque and power is different, especially if your towing.........The V8 is all wheel drive all the time where the V6 is 2wd or 4wd and I think also awd....just my nickle's worth. unless u have the need to tow stuff, the v6 is fine and cheaper to maintain. no timing belt in the v6, less gas, less oil (mobil 1 lol), less spark plugs, less coil packs to go bad, better mpg, and lighter

thanks, well from what i see alot on this site, is that often much most have the V8, or prefer the V8 even if they dont have it, but any more info would be nice so that i can make my decision. is there any one out there with first hand experiance who has done the switch with no regrets. if so whats so great about it. and whats not so great with what i have now?

Go v8 I got it and love it test drove a couple v6s def prefer the extra torque

I didn't switch from a V6 to V8 but my first 4Runner was totaled a few months ago - it was a V6 4x4 SE and when I was looking for a new 4Runner I did test drive a V8. It felt fine, I could feel the extra torque at low speeds but the 4Runner itself was not in the greatest shape so I didn't buy it. I found another V6 that was in great shape and had a great documented service history so I bought it.

I don't tow a lot and when I do it's nothing heavy so from that point of view what I wanted was a 4Runner that was well taken care of. If that happened to be a V8 then great. If that happened to be a V6 then great. I'm perfectly happy with my V6.

First thing that pops into my mind - Why does your friend want to trade his V8 for your V6?

Miles, color, options, mileage,..?

I own an '06 V6 and it's got more than enough power for my needs - so unless I needed to tow a heavy trailer, boat, etc - I can't think of any reason for swapping mine for an '06 V8 other than lower miles maybe.

To each his own - but I'd still want to know the real reason your friend wants to swap.

I had a new 2010 Sequoia cuz the 5th gen's had no V8 like the Lexus version, and truth be told, i didnt like the looks of the 5th gen..feels hollow and sounts "tin-ish" when u close the doors, etc.

So i sold it to a Russian the ships them overseas for big $$ and got a 2008 V8 exactly like my 2003. I gave up a 5.7L for the 4.7L 4runner.

I have had both -- had a V6, but bought a V8 due to buying a travel trailer -- needed the extra towing power. Those who say mileage is almost the same, sorry, not true. I lost 2-3 mpg, interestingly, the exact EPA differential between the two.

Having said that, the V8 is smoother and quieter, but gas will cost you a little bit more. But I expected that going in, so I wasn't surprised. I'm happy with my choice, but the V6 I had was an awesome truck also.

just curious, why does he want to trade? the only advantage I would see in having the V6 over the V8 is because the 4.0 L has the TRD supercharger available. What is the mileage on both? I just recently bought my '03 SR5 with the V8 and i text drove a couple V6's and the V8 has way more power. you especially feel that in the initial acceleration.

Coming from a 2009 JKU Wrangler into a V6 2004 was a very noticeable difference.

It's definitely not underpowered. The 4.0 L V6 is a very strong engine. But ya figure, why not get the V8 when its available for around a 1 mpg decrease?

Keep the V6

V6 - better gas mpg, easy access to the oil filter, no timing belt to change,
2wd. more horse power then the V8

V8- timing belt needs to be replaced every 90k, skid plate needs to be removed to change the oil filter, all time 4wd, lower mpg, higher maintance cost.

If you're going to tow a big trailer, then the V8 would be the best choice
