should i do the trade for a V8?

Ok here is my 2cents for what its worth my first 4runner was an 04 SR5 V6 with a CAI and exhaust put 90k on it no problems with it ever and I beat the heck out of it. Well I decided I wanted a 5th Gen Trail so I did that for a year lift and CAI and exhaust.... it was nice but after a year I decided I didn't want the car payment associated with the new vehicle so traded it on an 03 Limited with a V8 lifted it CAI exhaust.... and lets just say if my 04 had the V8 I would have never got rid of it especially since I have a led foot and the V6 does seem alittle underpowered even on my 5th gen with the lift and 33's fully loaded down with gear.

So in the end if both have close mileage and he didn't beat the crap out of it I would say go for it also as long as the 4lo works and the exhaust manifold isn't cracked

very nice!! well i do not have a boat, or trailer to tow, so thats out. and i might be wrong but i hear if you put a cold air intake, and better exahust i will get better millege. for those asking why he wants to trade, idk. he just says if i want, i complain sometimes about not getting one myself. he's 4runner is very nice, clean title, and no damage anywere, it has about 8,500 miles more then mine. i think him just loosing his job might have something to do with it. the only thing that bothers me about mine is the fact that its a switch, as in 2wd and 4x4 which i personally dont like. if you get a 4x4 it needs to serve its purpose, even if it means spending more on gas which i could care less about. but anys thank you for all your answers im almost set on the V8. ill call him, and see whats up.
 
I have owned both. A 2006 Limited V6 4WD that I bought new and drove for a year, and my current ride......a 2007 Limited V8 4WD that I also bought new.

I originally had my heart set on the V8 but I got such a great deal on the V6 at the dealer, I couldn't pass it up, ..........but as time went on I regretted settling for the
V6.

So one year later, I sold the 2006 V6 Runner and bought my new 2007 Limited V8 4WD that I still drive today. I LOVE the V8 and have never missed or regretted getting rid of the V6.

The V8 is smother, quieter and more powerful. The V8 sounds great even with a stock exhaust.

The increase in power and torque of the V8 are quite noticeable. The difference in gas mileage is hardly noticeable.

If Toyota never offers the V8 in the 4Runner again, it will just make the V8 4th gens even that much more desirable.

they have mods to counter that, like a cold air intake, timing belt conversion, and the 06' and new modles you dont need to worrie about the oil filter because you can take it out the top. i dont have anything to tow, but know when it comes down to business my V8 will own you!!! :whipping2:flipoff:

So i sold it to a Russian the ships them overseas for big $$ and got a 2008 V8 exactly like my 2003. I gave up a 5.7L for the 4.7L 4runner.

HAHAHA. This debate never dies.

HP only tells one part of the story! The place a V8 will always beat a V6 is in low end power. Yes, technically the v6 produces more HP; but its power peak is at 5800 rpm. That is dang near redlining the engine.

Less cylinders means more work. A V8 is designed for LOW RPM power. If you are running the 4.7 v8 at 5k, you are missing the point. The v8 feels smoother simply because it can loft along and work much less harder.

For me, numbers are important; but what is more important is understanding what the NUMBERS mean. That the v8 peaks at a much lower RPM, and has such a STRONG low band power curve means to me I utilize the power much more.

As for the scary timing belt complaint. Blah. Do it yourself. It is easy and takes an afternoon. OR pay someone. 90k is the service schedule... that is around 7 years of driving.

Don't let people scare you on this. I hate the way it sounds like a death sentence. A v8 will last longer, with maintenance, because the engine works less. Since in general, the engine hangs out in a a lower RPM range; it means less work and wear.

The Small block v8 350 is such a dang popular engine, bc it is literally invincible. Lower rpm = less wear. Being able to access power at a lower band means more fun, and less wear.

Sorry to further flame the debate.

Timing belt conversion?!?! Wtf are you talking about?

You still haven't told us the years or models of the trucks. Seems fishy to me that he wants to trade also. Not trying to be "that guy" in this thread but the whole thing seems weird to me.
 
If you are worried about MPG then put a K&N intake on it. Im actually getting better mpg after I put my lift and Nittos on than stock

Seconded. A Conversion? I have only heard of this on race cars, which are expected to get routine tear downs. Why on god's green earth would you do this? Are people so scared of a timing belt? In my years, I have never seen one go on any vehicle I have ever owned. The timing belt has turned into a huge boogie man... scaring everyone.

Anyway.

The timing belt on my parent's suburban broke while they were towing a boat. Yeah...that engine was toast. To be fair I'm sure it was past due for a change. I don't know what the recommended service interval for those chevy 350's was but I think they had at least 150k miles on the clock. So timing belts are really not that big of a deal but it really is important that they get changed at or soon after the recommended interval.

Toyota says 90k miles for the 4.7L V8 but you know they have some extra tolerance built in. I'm sure most of them can go 120k with no problem. But is that something you really want to risk? I'd rather pay to get it changed early than blow the engine.

$1.5k every 90k miles is nada considering NOTHING else needs to be done other than oil/filters and diffs (>60k if you use synthetic)

I have 144k on the original timing belt, it will get replaced this weekend, but still 144k on the original timing belt,,,,,,,,,,TOYOTA V8,,,enough said

Ask your mechanic what he thinks of the condition? Toyota is playing it way safe with the recommended interval. Somebody went over 300k on Mud with no noticeable adverse wear. Make sure you get your WP done too.

Climate plays a huge role.
