Should I downgrade?

So my local dealership contacted me today about buying back my 2010 TE w/ 75k miles, they claim to be prepared to offer over book value for it which would put just over $14k in my pocket after payoff. If they could find a 4th gen 4x4, with under 100k miles for around $14k I may consider the deal. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but it would be nice to have a paid off truck especially if I could get a V8 model. I also have all of my stock suspension that could be put back on so that I could put my Radflos on a 4th gen.

Just wanted to see what kind of input I could get from all of you, thanks in advance.

Forget it, or go ahead and test drive a 4th gen. The 4th gen guys love to harp about cheapening and decontenting, but they are delusional.

I would get a truck (e.g. Tacoma or bigger) if you were going to get out of a 5th gen...get something else that may add practicality...why go trade in a perfectly good 5th gen to drive someone else's dump? Just IMHO.
 
Did you buy your 5th gen new? Are you in a financial crunch? Do you like or dislike your 5th gen?

Owning both, I feel like my 4runners are totally different even though the chassis and engine is similar. To me my 4th gen feels much cheaper than my 5th gen all around. There are things I do like about my 4th gen over the 5th gen as well. However, I wouldn't trade my 5th gen that I know all the history on for a questionable 4th gen, even if it did have a V8. However, financially tough times could change the scenario completely.

I do have to sort of agree with Thai about possibly moving to something like a tacoma. If I had to do it again, I probably would get a taco over the 4runner. Not that I don't like my 4runner but sometimes a pickup would be more practical.
 
I bought it used with 45k miles on it, even the dealers low number is higher than I paid for the truck. This and the fact that we plan on trading my wife's car for a 00-04 Tacoma and giving her the keys to the 4Runner is why I am considering this move. We love the truck, I just have no experience with the 4th gens but from the sounds of it, I probably wouldn't be happy going from a 5th gen TE to any model of the 4th gen.
 
I would not do it. Plus the dealership will figure out a way to rip you off. They will change the price or anything else they can do. They only do this stuff if they can make money.

I just went from a 4th to a 5th gen. I have a TE also. The 4th gen was a great vehicle but I would not want to go back to it.

Do you seriously believe that the dealer, a moneymaking enterprise, wants to pay you more than your vee-he-cul is worth?

Call your dealer, tell them what your KBB value is, raise it by 1000, and then tell them you'll bring by the truck and they can draft you a check.

This is a scam.

It's either a letter, or an email "accidentally" sent to you and made to look like a discussion between a salesman and the sales manager.

Every time they do this I tell them I'll pick up the check (or preferably 100's) tomorrow with title in hand. I NEVER hear back from those jackholes again... for 6 months or so.
 
I went from an 07 Tacoma 4 door TRD OR to a 4th Gen 06 Sport V8...

I think the Taco was a nicer vehicle and more practical. I downsized to eliminate my payment. It was necessary for financial reasons but now that things have evened out again. I wish I had kept it.

No payment is nice. But I miss my truck.
 
Nothing wrong with getting rid of a truck payment, but in no way is doing it through the dealer a good idea.

Look at your local want ads. See what stuff is buying and selling for. If you can sell your 5th gen and be left with enough cash in pocket to buy something else you'd like to drive, 4th gen or Taco or whatever, absolutely do it.

Funny, and true story... I recently bought a new truck, traded in my old one. Got what I think is a reasonably good deal. Anyway, a week after I brought the new truck home, the "sister" dealership of the one I bought my truck from (owned by same company, just on another side of town) sent me one of those fliers. It said they were desperate for used trucks and would give me something like $23,500 for my trade (125% above KBB). Also they touted the "New" truck to be over 30% off MSRP and 0% financing for a long, long time. I looked on the website, and they already had my old truck on the lot advertised at $24,000!

I took a pic and texted it to the mgr (I had been working with him on my deal) with the words "REALLY?" Then called him up. He was kinda quiet at first until he realized I knew it was all marketing BS and was just busting his balls about it. I suggested he call up the other lot and sell it to them for the $23,500 for a quick, easy profit. At that he chuckled and said "Well, yeah. We gotta get people in here..." :roll:

All that said, especially if I'm going to be handing the keys to my wife, I would not trade down for an older model/more miles and unknown history of the vehicle and how it was maintained (or neglected). Actually, I'd be putting her in the new vehicle and taking the old one. Always have, except when hers was only a 2-3 years old.

I started looking at autotrader to see comparable vehicles for sale which made me realize two things; One: even if it were not a marketing ploy, it's still a trade in price range low ball, and Two: I got a ridiculously good deal on my truck when I bought it. That with the fact that it would take several thousands and many hours to get a 4th gen to be near the capability and usability of my truck has my mind made up.

Once again, thanks for talking me off the ledge everyone, that's what a good forum community is for.

Good thinking I'm only on here to help a friend rebuild his engine. I have never even open the hood of a Toyota in my life. Useless. In my opinion. You want something long term Chevy. You want something sexy inside and out with a nice underhood dodge you want a real man's ride buy the frame of a mustang build it up till you've spent $40,000 + and top it at 932 hp. With a modified big body dodge challenger engine in it twin turbocharged with a mini bully supercharger. ..... GT Deluxe only mustang with big enough frame
 
Oh and custom Roush air intake actually using the slitted air intake hood and AI slots which have become a decor thing now.
