Should I sell my 3rd gen,?

Looking for opinions here and I know that may be a little biased because this is a 3rd gen forum.

Currently have a very clean rust free 99' 5 speed third gen 4x4 3.4l with 240k miles. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Love the 5speed and J shifting 4WD.

Have come across a clean 03 4th gen V8 4x4 with 192k miles. Thinking about selling my third gen to get the 4th. 4th looks very clean also.

I like how offroad capable my 3rd gen is but 95% of my driving is on road. Ive got a set of 265/75/16 BFG KO2's on my third gen now.

Ithink the V8 would tow a boat or small trailer easier than my 3rd gen also. I can get the 4th gen for less than $2000 more than my current ride.

Below is a pic of my 4runner (old set of Duratracs I couldn't get balanced)

You just never know what sort of surprises any used car with 192k holds. At least with your rig, which looks great, you know what has and hasn't been done.

The 2UZ could be tempting though....

Have come across a clean 03 4th gen V8 4x4 with 192k miles. Thinking about selling my third gen to get the 4th. 4th looks very clean also.

I'll trade you my 99 2WD :D but I keep my sport hood and bumper

You should just trade with me for my 2000 Limited automatic. Gets 18mpg on Cooper AT3's.

I'll overlook that yours is older and a manual, and you can look over my extra 10,000 miles and wonky fender, and lagging maintenance, and the fact mine generally looks like shit compared to yours.....

I don't know much about 4th gens, but get what makes you happy man, even if that is one sweet 3rd gen to part with.

I'll echo what others have said, get what makes you happy, and that is an exceptional 3rd gen.

If it were mine, I wouldn't part with it till I Keeled over. And if for some reason I did, it wouldn't come cheap.

If you want to go ahead. But you know yours is good and you don't know that the 4th gen is good. The grass is always greener...

I have a 3rd and 4th gen, and really like both. If there is anyway to keep yours and get the other then I would do that. My 4th gen is the 4.0 V6 and not the V8, but the power difference is very noticeable. I really like my 4th gen, but sadly my wife stole it from me. For pulling a trailer I think you would really like the 4th gen, they also have more room, and better seats IMO. You will miss your 3rd gen though

Keep it!!. it's green and you know the issues is you have any. I love the green.
Or get both as was suggested. :)

I have kept my little troubled 99. Every time I've tried to find something else I have a panic attack - literally, it's crazy....and i've only had mine a few months...so she's still with me till I have to face the Devil since that's where I'm a going. :mad2::flame:

So your wife has a 4th gen already? And when you say $2000 on top of your truck, what are the prices for each? I would say if you love your wife's truck more than yours then maybe. Personally I am thinking 5th gen when my son turns 16 and gets mine.

THIS is why I'd rather convert my 2WD to 4WD than brave the classifieds. We usually don't get lucky twice.
This right here is a great point. I have a 2WD, that is excellent all around. Im always looking on CL and amazed at the POS 3rd gens in CA going for $7k plus.

On topic, if i were you Id keep the 3rd and get the 4th too.

First off, the answers to your question are going to have a bias towards keeping the 3rd gen, since you posted in the 3rd sub-forum. But having recently purchased a 3rd gen over a 4th gen, I can give you my reasoning...

Some of the pros that led me to my 3rd gen are:
  • Manual t-case shifter
  • Better looks, IMO
  • Less complicated (based on the assumption that the older cars have fewer electronics)
  • Better ground clearance

The 4th gens I looked at just felt more soccer-mom-ish to me. And I don't think they are holding their value as well as the 3rd gens. There's a reason for that.

Just one thought re: offroad capability. Lots of people say "I go offroad, but 95% of my driving is on road". Of course it is. All of us spend more miles on the highway driving to/from the trails than on the trail itself. Plus all of the daily driver stuff. Unless you have a dedicated trail vehicle that you trailer to the trail, it's going to spend a lot of time on the highway. That's not really the point, though. The better question is, if offroading is important, will this vehicle do the job? If offroading is what you want to do, even only one weekend a month during the summer, you need an offroad capable vehicle.

Without some work, the 4th gen is step backward from the 3rd gen as far as offroad capability goes, especially if your 3rd gen has the rear diff lock. The 4th can be modified to match the 3rd, but out of the box it's wider, longer, and doesn't have the ground clearance. Make sure you're OK with that.

(My personal opinion: That's a darn good looking 3rd gen you have there. No way I would part with it.)

I think the bigger question is how important is towing. Is using the 3rd gen getting tire some for towing? Just need to look at what factors would make you want to upgrade and how important are those factors.

I love my 3rd gen but it doesn't tow very well with all these hills around me. I ended up getting a diesel. If I didn't have two trucks I could definitely be considering the v8 since it would make life easier.

I say compare how you feel inside and consider how important towing it.

For more people's offroading the 4th gen would be fine unless you really need the extra clearance.

My brother's 07 4th gen is nice. I would upgrade in a heartbeat. But he also paid $17k for it couple years back.

Some of the older 4th generation had issues. Research the year your buying.

I had an 04 V8. It was fantastic, loved that damn thing. I regretted selling it the moment it pulled out of my garage with the new owner in the seat.

I have less of an opinion on the 3rd gen because I havent driven it as much (about 40 miles of seat time...) and it has consumed a massive chunk of my income for the 2 months I've owned it. :frusty:

The electronics are the big thing. The 4th gen is more complicated than the 3rd. I had a chance at another 4th gen before I bought my current one and was very surprised when the transfer case was fully functional. If it isn't, it's quite the hefty bill to fix. With no VSC or ATRAC on yours, it would be cheaper to maintain. I opted for the 3rd gen this time around because of purchase price and (perceived) maintenance costs.

I feel like the 4wd system in the 4th is quite superior when working properly. That Torsen center diff is a thing of beauty. AWD with the V8 is definitely a bonus for towing.

At 192k you're also in the realm for a timing belt job. That's a VVT-i interference engine so needs to be done. At the dealer it'll cost you around $1000.

The 4th gen is a heck of a vehicle, as is your 3rd gen. For towing and seat time, you may be more comfortable in the 4th.
