Should I sell my 3rd gen,?

Toyota RAV4 is tailgate bagged 4x4 while a Honda CRV is usually bagged AWD.
- our 2008 Limited Gen3 v6, does have a transfer case
- does it have 4Hi or 4Lo ... absolutely Not
- does 4x4 work over 25 mph ... another No
- will it go through a lot of snow & has improved stability on black ice ... Yes
- "it is what it is" & Toyota did call the RAV4, a 4x4
- right or wrong, who am I to change the Factory description now
- was it inaccurate, a term used loosely or just good Marketing ?

^^ While I consider my Gen3 T4R a true 4x4, with transfer case gearing options / at the push or pull of a shifter lever....and 4x4 at Hwy speeds.

Strictly speaking, "4X4" refers to a vehicle with four wheels, all of which are powered. It's the difference between "4WD" and "AWD" that's less clear-cut, but generally, 4WD implies a low range; AWD does not, regardless of whether it's full-time or on-demand AWD as with the RAV4. 4x4abc.com has a good explanation.

Of course, manufacturers are concerned with selling vehicles, so the customer's perception matters. So you get the 4WD badge on the "tough" RAV4 and the AWD badge on the "grocery getter" Matrix, both of which use the same AWD system.

It's marketing. 4WD sounds tougher than AWD when it comes to an SUV, so that's why the badge on the back says "4WD". Other manufacturers besides Toyota use this little sleight of hand as well.

It's a gray line between the terms... I call the RAV AWD, but it technically isn't even AWD/4WD except when the front wheels are slipping. I reserve '4WD' (or 4x4) for trucks that can lock in 4WD and have low range transfer cases...but that is my preference, there really isn't a clear distinction.

Then we can talk about how an open differential '4WD' vehicle is really 2WD

I don't have a problem with the 4WD term used by Toyota. There are no exact rules stating what 4WD, AWD, 4x4, or Quatro are supposed to mean. Some are trademarks.
4WD sounds most generic of them. True, RAV4's system should be explained as electronic, part-time, on-demand, light duty 4 wheel drive, but most people don't care.
