Should I switch Navigation Systems?

Well... Im having a delema here.... So Im gonna ask everyone what I should do....

I have a Camry navigation installed, with most of the bells and whistles hooked up... BUT I want Video up front.... I have a 2 piece navigation to hook up, and with that I am sure I can get Video on the navigation, since I have done it on a GS430, via a box from VLAD and a Pioneer GEX-P7000...

Is there a bif difference in Navigations? I don't know if the speed of navigation is the same for the camry Navigation, and the two piece 4Runner navigation (Factory)..... PLUS, I've got to run probably another 15 wires to the front to connect the two....

Or should I just wait, and hope someone figures out video on nav for the camry unit....

dunno. I'd say if you want it now, go ahead and swap, it's gonna be a pain to do, but keep in mind that you don't HAVE to stick the nav ecu in the back like toyota does. you could always look for another location to make it a little easier.

I was at the same dilema in the beginning as I have a custom written ham radio application that a guy in calif started writing and I've jumped on the bandwagon (kinda funny too, he owns a 3rd gen 4r... : ) I'd like to have a full vga computer screen available to me, but in the end, the solara nav was more accessible to me and so I went with that. I'll prolly eventually end up with another display somewhere/somehow. dunno.

Honestly tho, if you want to do video and not have to deal with the hassles the lawyers stuck in the camry/solara unit, you have just a few options.

• do the vlad thing with the split ecu unit
• live with the hassles (I, for one, would to get rid of the 'I Agree' button, but it's not gonna be possibe, I doubt)
• hack your camry/solara unit....SOMEWHERE in there is an appropriate place to get the video/rgb signal in. unfortunately, as I found out, the service manual (schematics) for that radio is currently not available from fujitsu-ten yet...not until it's no longer in a dealer-swapout kind of replacement program

Prolly the first two options are the most robust and trouble free, though...

Well it seems, that on the Sienna forum, people are getting video on the front screen via the RSE unit (Rear Sear Entertainment), which is another box, and then you can send the picture to the front... If I do that, Im still not using a DVD changer or what not for video, and stuck with the DVD player that is included with the Toyota Roof mounted TV....

Maybe I should wait and figure that out... but again, I would probably be running wires for that, and then Im in the same boat..

I would really like to be able to read it. Any ideas?

What do you think would happen if one was to open up the Nav, and remove the Dvd player and upgrade it to one that not only plays the nav cd, but also mp3's etc and real dvd 's. And if one was to do this, do you think your headunit woould then play dvd's

Well Jo,

Video up front is nice, and I too would like to have it, BUT I really don't agree with video up front because of safety reasons. I would have a hard time justifying the cost of another NAV system or converter box to watch video in my car. The NAV system in itself is distracting enough, but also very useful. NAV has a real purpose, but watching movies does not.


If I want to watch DVD's, then I wait to get home and watch them on my 50" Plasma screen in real surround sound.

dunno, I had no trouble on any of the computers I've got availble to me. uninstall and reinstall? I was using the latest ver reader from adobe (6.01), if that helps...

Man, i went to the Toyota recommended audio install place here in town to check the alarm systems they had. We got to talking about Nav's. He was trying to sell me on the Kenwood nav/dvd system. He swears it blowes away the Toyota nav, says the POI is better and the features and the maps.
Then he says i am full of it, that there is no Toyota Headunit nav with the ECU built in to the unit and not in the rear of the vehicle. I have to go back tomorrow to prove he is wrong. He sayd even if it was from a Toyota it probably will not fit in nor have same plugs as my 4Runner. They guy was so talking crap about the Toyota nav's. Then we talked about how i wanted to add the reverse camera and he show me some ugly and huge cameras he said he could install. He says i cannot get the Toyota one aftermarket and says it probably won't plug into the headunit. Man, i cannot believe this company does all Toyotas installs here. He says to comeback tomorrow to talk to his lead installer, that he does no installs. Admitting finally that he may be wrong.
We made the right choice i think with our Toyota Nav's.

That's why I don't like going to local stereo shops. It seems all they care about is unload their inventory. I haven't found a shop that actually listens to what I need.
