Should I switch to Mobil 1 high mileage?

My 2016 SR5 has 75k miles now. It runs well without any leak. I’m changing oil again and wonder if I should switch from Mobil 1 Fuel economy ow-20 to M1 high mileage ow-20? I see the HM label says for engines with 75k and above. Not sure if there is any advantage now. What do you use when the mileage is up to 75k?

What does the high mileage oil actually do? Some different additive package?

I would run Toyota 0w/20. It is great oil, look up some breakdowns of it.

Pretty sure HM oil has extra additives in it. Ive always had older Japanese cars and have ALWAYS ran Rotella Diesel oil in them and they absolutely loved it. Its cheap and works great. Has extra detergents in it.

We’re at 310K miles on a 2014. Lately been using Quaker State 0w20 synthetic as it’s
Cheapest, but also one of the highest rated. I’ve also run Rotella gas truck 0w20 synthetic, for the same reasons.

I think the high mileage oils have additives to prevent or stop leaks.

High mileage oil supposedly helps the seals and gaskets that are in contact with oil remain pliable (not get hard and brittle). I use Valvoline 5W30, but I have a 4th gen V8. Been using it for 6-8 years. No leaks!

PETROLEUM QUALITY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA - all oils tests are there.

Read up, post #14:

Just a moment...

“High moly was in order to increase the fuel efficiency of 0W-20 even more so that Japanese cars would have their unbeatable fuel economy, not only helped by the high VI and low HTHS viscosity of 0W-20 but also the low friction of synthetic base oil and even lower friction thanks to high moly. However, after Infineum (an ExxonMobil - Shell joint venture) additive company's patented trinuclear moly became famous, Japanese folks also learned that 50 - 100 ppm of trinuclear organic moly does a better job in friction reduction and antiwear, antioxidation protection than 1000 ppm of traditional organic moly. Therefore, apparently, Toyota 0W-20 SN made by ExxonMobil uses trinuclear organic moly now. The tests show that 50 - 100 ppm trinuclear moly when used along with standard amounts of ZDDP greatly reduces wear and friction. Therefore, it also reduces the requirement for high ZDDP. Also note that trinuclear moly is used in Mobil Delvac 1300 Super HDEO as well: "Trimer additive technology is a patented additive technology that imparts outstanding wear performance, effective oxidation resistance and improved frictional properties while contributing little to the overall ash content enabling Mobil Delvac 1300 Super to deliver performance beyond the boundaries of industry requirements of API CJ-4." Trinuclear moly is probably the second most effective additive in engine oil, only second to ZDDP. However, the two need to be used together anyway, which makes it one of the two most important additives in the oil.“

So in summary, the competing oils were using Trinuclear Organic Molybdenum “Trimer”, while Toyota was using old school Molybdenum. You can use far less Trimer to get the same effect. Current Toyota oil is made by ExxonMobil and uses Trimer, so there is far less of your beloved Moly in it.

No engine oil manufacturer is going to make deficient oil. There is no advantage to using the costly Toyota oil. Even the stealerships do not use it. Finally, scoreboard matters and we have 310K miles on a 2014 SR5, all on non-OEM fluids.

I've been using Mobil1 0W40 on a P/u for almost 300K miles and other cars
Mercedes, Porsches and the new C8 Corvettes come with this stuff.
Can get a 5qt jug at WallyWorld for 25 bucks.
Better oils like Motul, Liqui Moly, Fuchs, Total Quartz (Elf), Schaeffer Etc just have crazy prices. They all use the modern Moly

Unless you are buying the actual Toyota oil in quarts, I wouldn't trust the dealer for the oil change, a lot of them use other bulk oils.

Here is an ad, but also somewhat of a primer if you drill deep.

No leaks = no need for high mileage.

After 75k I have always used the same thing as before 75k - and never had an oil related issue.

A HM oil contains more seal maintaining ingredients, and will cause some leaks to reseal if the gasket is dried out. You shouldn't have that issue using M1 at a reasonable interval.

OTOH, it will not hurt to use the HM version, and you can switch back and forth if you like.

I’ve been using AMSOIL signature series in my ‘07 since I picked it up at 96k miles. Now has 123k and I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in engine health. Previously ran Mobil 1 and never thought it really stood out from the rest. Pennzoil ultra platinum is a great oil as well.

Years ago I used Amsoil but couldn't deal with the ridiculous MLM distribution scheme. Felt like I was dealing with my ex-gf's Arbonne.

Yeah I get that 100%. I’m actually a dealer for them haha

Yeah Amsoil is very good stuff...just got to ignore the mlm and just who (and how many "who's") are getting paid.

Quick aside: MLM was a good way to market stuff, pre-internet. Hardly needed today; they could likely drop their prices several bucks a quart and maintain or increase profits without it.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. There is no hard set mileage as to when you should start using high mileage oil. I’m sure as you know as a engine gets older gaskets and seals can start cracking which can cause leaks and the pistons wall can develops numerous micro scratched which can cause oil /fuel bypass. High mileage oil has additives that is suppose to cause seals to swell to prevent leaking and fill the micro scratches to prevent bypass. If you changed your oil frequently and have mostly highway miles your engine is probably still in good shape and you can still use regular oil. But if you haven’t been so diligent with your oil changes, driving mostly in the city, have a lead foot or have been doing a lot of towing, you may have worn your engine down a little more than normal and is probably in need of high mileage oil.

From your comment above it sounds like your engine is in good shape so I think it’s not urgent to change to high mileage just yet. Once you pass 100,000 you may want to consider switching to high mileage at that point. Just do your own research and decide when the time is right.
