Should I????

It doesn't seem like anyone ever mentions this, but why do so many people care about the '99 coils now in the year 2010? They were nice to have 11 years ago when they were new, but at this point they aren't anything special to have IMO. Even if they by some chance haven't lost their extra inch of height by now from sagging, they still aren't going to be as good as some new OMEs (or something similar) for around = $170 or $180/pair. Not to mention, anyone can buy brand new factory '99 OEM coils and put them under any year 3rd gen.

I think it's kinda like paying more for a car because the tires on it were once nice and brand new. Definitely not trying to start a debate, and there are lots of other features specific to the '99 that are great, but I'm just wondering why this is so desireable. All that said, if the truck is everything he claims it to be, $6K is fair.

If you have the money, and you like the 4R, and you think is the car you want, then go for it. forget about the rest, just buy it. then you are going to have enough time to figure out what you want to change on it or modify on it.
 
I would jump all over it.

Paid $6700 for my 99 limited with locker and 125k miles last feb/march. Looked for months and it was the ONLY one with a locker under 170k miles. Kinda felt lucky.


Also not sure about the fuss over '99 coils either. My rear sagged like crap. Daystar spacers were perfect cure although installation was not as cut and dry as instructions.

Do the carfax like mentioned before, might be a waste of money but you never know. Good luck, looks like a nice ride.
 
BOUGHT IT!!!! $5,700 + $100 for driving it up to me. Now time to play.

Items of business in order of priority:

-Repair the tear in the driver seat cushion
-Liners (Husky or Weathertech, still unsure...)
-New hydraulics for the rear hatch
-Buff the swirl marks out of the hood
-Replace fluids in tranny,t-case, and diffs
-Deckplate Mod
-Paint bumper trim/roof rack

What am I missing?
 
Are you planning to go off-road? I'd suggest 32" tires (either 265/75/16 or 235/85/16), grey wire mod, and rear diff breather extension. Personally, I think the deck plate mod is bunk and all it does is make more sound. Some claimed 1-2hp gain. Whoopee doo.

Congrats on the 4Runner. I almost went down and bought that exact one (St. George, right?). Looked to be solid. That's an awesome price you got it for, too. The guy said timing belt/water pump was done at 90k, just FYI. You probably need to source a button for that power seat. IIRC, the power antenna doesn't work? Tacoma whip mod time.

my coils are great, no sag and ride like new..... my truck wasn't beat before i got it either though, soccer mom ride.


i think it's about not having to do that not everyone needs or wants a 3 inch lift, so why not start out with a 1 inch lift and call it good?

i get what you are saying but there are advantages to some for buying a truck already equipped with a small lift.

I'm planning a little off-roading. My parents have a place in Moab so I'll be down there a lot. Obviously I won't be doing anything crazy, at least not for a while, but I'll keep the mods in mind. I'm not sure what the grey wire mod is, but I'll research it. The only reason I was going to do the deckplate mod was to increase fuel economy. If the results aren't substantial, maybe I'll pass. Would a traditional intake system provide better numbers?

Yep, that's the St. George one. Bruce was nice enough to drive it up to Provo for me. I'll look into the power seat button, and the antenna will probably be dealt with later on down the road. It picks up FM stuff fine in town. Besides, my XM will be used 95% of the time.

You won't net any substantial gains with the deckplate mod, if any. Keep it stock. On the freeway, I was at 21-22MPG all stock. You won't get much better than that.
 
haha that's funny i'll be down in st.gorge later this spring or summer, my sis lives there and i drive out at least once a year. you guys should take me on a trail ride once i'm down there, she lives out by snow creek canyon area.

add me as a friend on here so i remember in a few months or so.

change the oil, change air filter (go with paper ones trust me i have k&n and its not as good), check coolant, check your engine compression, change sparkplugs, clean fuel injector, change fuel filter, thats about it.

I'm up in Salt Lake, which is 4 hours north of St George. I won't go down there during the summer on purpose. It gets HOT!! If you're up by Salt Lake, I'll take you on a few trails around here.
