Should the driver's door unlock when opening?

I've had my 2002 for about 2 months now and I'm wondering if the front (or any) doors should unlock when opening the door from the inside when locked.

For example: I arrive at destination with the doors locked, put the truck in park, turn off and try to exit. Do I need to unlock the door myself or will the door unlock when pulling the handle?

Nearly every car I've driven post 1986 has this feature and I'm not sure if my Toyota is an exception or if I need to fix something.

My 96 doesnt do that

No, you'll have to unlock it manually first then open. Only the newer Toyotas do this as the actuators are different now.

I don't think I've ever had a vehicle that automatically unlocks its doors when opening from the inside.

My '96 T4R Limited certainly doesn't. (I know, because I almost always unknowingly lock the door with my elbow, especially in the summer with the windows down).

I'm surprised your Matrix doesn't do it.

Maybe it does, but I never lock my doors while I'm in the car, so I guess I never would have noticed.

My doors don't automatically lock when the car is moving either, maybe it has this feature, but I guess it was never enabled by the factory/dealership.
I would have disabled it myself if that was the case anyway. I'm not a fan of doors that autolock while you're in the vehicle.

My sons 01 does unlock door when you put it in park and shut off ignition. Putting it Park does not do it but shutting the key off does unlock the door.

My auto lock unit is setup when I park and power off all doors unlock automatically.

I'm always bumping the lock knob while driving with the window open and my arm on the sill, then when I try to exit the car... can't get out!

I haven't re-calibrated my exit from the truck yet so I'm always throwing my shoulder into the door only to get denied.

So I get out of the truck yesterday and notice that there's a black control box on the floor by my feet that says "SECURITY MAIN CONTROL MODULE". I peek under the dash and notice that there's an unplugged harness, so I plug it back in and put the box back where I assume it fell from - the double sided tape still had some stick to it.

Long story short, it's an alarm system that will both lock the doors when starting the truck and unlock the doors when turning off - wishes answered! :whoo:

I actually tested this out this weekend in my Matrix and you're right, the door does indeed automatically unlock when I pull the handle from inside. Cool.

My 99 unlocks after I turn off the engine as well.

2000 SR5 does not unlock the door when opening from inside. Funny, it won't let me lock the door if its running (cold Minnesota practice). I have to use the key to lock the door so nobody takes my nice warm 4Runner. Maybe I'll have to see if it unlocks when opening the door from the inside with the engine running... and in park of course!

mine locks when I turn the key on, unlock when I turn the key off

if I want to unlock when the key is on, have to use the pull knob on the door or the rocker switch on the gang switch on drivers door.

I'm posting this again, as the procedure definitely worked on my 2000 SR5. Follow the instructions exactly, and be sure to follow the path in red to disable the auto lock.

Automatic Door Locking / Unlocking Function:

The factory setting for the automatic door locking and unlocking function is on.

1: Sit in the drivers seat with the drivers door open.

2: Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to on (not acc) 5 times (on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on) within a 10 second period. The status monitors LED turns on, and the piezo chirper sounds once.
***You must perform the next steps within 30 seconds***
Select the operating mode:

Automatic door locking and unlocking on: Close the drivers door. Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper sounds once, and the exterior lights flash once.

Automatic door locking and unlocking off: Close the drivers door once, then open and close it one more time. Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper sounds twice, and the exterior lights flash twice.

If you do not turn the ignition key to lock, or exceed 30 seconds during the programming steps, the status monitor's LED will turn off and the previous operation mode will remain.
