So I just put in a stock 4.88 to replace my stock 4.10 in the rear. Got it from a junkyard. It spun easily and no metal in oil so I was hoping it was in decent shape. Put it in and have found that the gear whine is very loud. Its not screeching down the street loud but definitely quite audible, especially over 50. Also consider that I have no carpeting in the back to kill any sound. I put in the 2.5 qts of gl5 syn blend in it. Hoping its normal but suspecting that its not.
Should there be much gear noise with stock 4.88?

I have factory 4.88s and I get a little whine at about 60mph + I'm about to throw a locker in the back and fill it up with synthetic and see if there's a difference

When I went from 4.10 to 4.88, I didn't really notice gear noise; I noticed driveline angle noise from the added lift (built at the same time). Good luck on quieting it down.
