The main advantages are to keep muddy paws off of the back of the seats and also to keep doggy nails from tearing up the leather. My lab mix used to get carsick occasionally and it made clean-up a no-brainer.
edit: Sorry I didn't answer your question completely - if it's a road trip I set it up like in the picture - if it's a short trip I place it in the cargo area without tying down.

That would be a Pitbull, I've had them my entire life, rescued, and trained many that have become wonderful family dogs. She looks 100% and should make a good addition to your family.

That would be a Pitbull, I've had them my entire life, rescued, and trained many that have become wonderful family dogs. She looks 100% and should make a good addition to your family.

Interesting you say that... I originally though she was or had a bit of Pitbull in her based on the definition in her chest and arms when sitting. But then the more I looked at her the more I saw a mix of my in-laws Golden Lab (something like this: http://www.justdogbreeds.com/images/breeds/labrador-retriever.jpg), with shorter hair and "less" floppy ears. Whatever she is, my wife and I are really looking forward to giving her a safe, loving home.

Beautiful dog! He looks part pit and maybe the rest some kind of lab.
I am a strong believer in making animals as safe as possible in the car. I have two medium sized pits. We just got another one recently. Previously we transported him in a 24wx36lx29h crate strapped in the back. He loves car rides, and is an upholstery chewer and window licker. In the crate, he cannot reach anything to damage, and he is more restricted and thus safer in an accident.
The new problem for us is now having two dogs. They make side-by side travel crates, but the problem is, they are each 21" wide, and the width of the cargo area is just over 41", so they won't quite fit side by side. We're going on a long road trip in late spring, so I'm trying to figure it out.
Ebay is a great place to find cheap, good quality crates. I think it is the most reasonable and safe option.

Here's Lola, our miniature dachshund. She'll be 4 years old this Valentine's Day.
And this is Izzy, our weimaraner. She turns 2 years old this St. Patrick's Day.

I'm a big fan of labs too, they are terrific dogs. We would have one if it weren't for the hair- the wife can't deal with that. Those photos are classic
Izzy has certainly mellowed but she still requires a lot of activity every day. During the summer I'll ride my bike and she'll run next to me and we'll go about 3 miles doing 15-20 mph most of the way. We get back and she'll still be ready to go. It's crazy. It makes her an excellent hunter though!
She is a great dog and I wouldn't trade her for anything, but you certainly have to appreciate the positive aspects to look past the negatives of this breed. The energy level and inquisitiveness is hard to contend with sometimes. And their intelligence can certainly work against you. I have to dead bolt doors we don't want her to open because she can and will open it.

That's similar to the labs. The labs are very smart but not quite so clever... Closed doors usually stay that way.
Did you use Mothers or Zaino on that dog? That's one shiny dog...:lmao:Contemplative Calvin...

I don't know what labs you've been around. My kids are a little too clever. I have to think ahead and try to be smarter than my dogs, cause they'll pull some McGuyver type stuff. Just sayin.
