I went custom

My rack was made by Perkins Performance in Puyallup, WA.

I added a hatch for the sunroof, providing access to the rack for photography, observation, and loading.

The rear rail is also removable so can mount a RTT to the rack and still get park in the garage.

4th of July, waiting for the fireworks show to start.

Behind the fairing, I have mounting tabs for 6 lights, if needed.

I had similar concerns, which is why there is foam tape below the crossbars. But over the entire summer of use, we never felt it flex beneath us. Jason probably over engineered this rack to indulge my paranoia.

This is mounted to the stock mounting points, and the rack was built to hold more than the weight of two full grown men. The extruded metal we used for a floor does not bend or flex. The frame's bars take more than 1000 lbs. of pressure to bend. The 4runner's roof has to support the weight of the vehicle in case of rollover. Given all that, I think the answer is "yes" and it could probably support the weight of four, but it'd be cozy.

I paid slightly more than I would have for a Gobi Stealth rack, which was my initial choice. However, Gobi wasn't offering one when I wanted to buy it and going local allowed me to make any changes I could think up before it went to powdercoat.

I'm sure Jason would be willing to make anything you can dream up, as he's already made another rack for the 5th Gen using mine as a template. The link in my signature should supply his contact info, if you need it.

Yeah that is quite a bit of money. Looks well worth it though.

Yeah, it was expensive but I got exactly what I wanted and the construction is better all around. I don't have any crimped tubes, ugly welds, or gaps in the extruded metal floor. I can use the area above my sunroof for storage if I need it, where as the Gobi is just open space.

The only thing Gobi offers that I don't have is a ladder for the lift gate, but I'm okay with that :cheers:

x2 on Perkin Performance's quality. Like SeattleMike, I too considered the gobi but after talking with Jason and seeing his work I decided to have him build me one to fit my needs.

seattlemike and darkie3495, those are some amazing racks. puyallup is pretty local to me so i may have a tlak with them. though taking a crayon drawing on a napkin probably wouldnt get me near the same results. i am assuming that if i go in there they can start with your rack and adapt it to fit a 3rd gen? that is pretty much the exact kind of rack i am wanting. how much wind noise to you get with the lights and the rack? i really like the ability to remove the rails for a RTT.

You'd be surprised. If you tell him what you want he can build one for your exact needs. it's up to your imagination, really.

wind noise wasn't too bad when it was just the rack but you could hear it. Once i installed the fairing and lights, the wind noise dropped dramatically.

I am a very big fan of the Gobi's. But since my wallet isn't. I built one. Oh ya, its not on a 4runner. Sorry about that. It is just a platform I made and attached it to 3 Thule crossbars. My girls enjoy it too.

A crayon drawing would be better than what I gave Jason to work with, which was a lot of finger pointing and grunts. He can do much with nothing, I highly recommend him. However, I have to warn you that if he is building it from scratch it's best if you leave the vehicle with him while he does the mock-up so he can get the dimensions just right.

Thanks! It's surprising how often it is used, too. It makes a great platform to wash second story windows and clean out the rain gutters over the garage, then hop down into the drivers seat and move on to the next set of windows. My only complaint is that I misjudged the opening; the glass doesn't fully retract into the roof, so while it looks fine from inside it's exposed from the top side. It's not a problem, but I would have had the whole thing come forward 4 inches more just to keep it covered.
