Shredded to Hell

Me and my 04 4R recently moved to ga.... in may my serpentine belt suddenly just came off in chunks... it caused an awful rattling sound... i got it replaced...$125... about 3 wks later it began shredding off AGAIN...and leaking oil... (5 seals timing cover, r/l valve seal covers, crank shaft seal,) an oil dipstick tube, and $830 fixed that problem... and 1 week later after getting it out of the shop (3 weeks for the NEW new belt) the belt shredded YET AGAIN and this time it is leaking antifreeze...(waiting on the shop to call me now with an diagnosis)... in all three situations i was in motion when the belt began to shred... there were no prior warnings , no sounds... no noise no lights... un till the belt was gone... has anyone else ever encounter an issue similar to this or have i been cursed!?!?!?

I can only hope your talking about the front drive pully belt and not the timing belt...

If your continuously shredding belts then A.) theres debree in one of the pully's tracks. B.) something is in the belts travel path that is cutting into or causing the damage. C.) somebody is selling you really old dry rotted belts.

do a visual inspection of all the pully's on the front of the engine check to see if any pullys are out of balance (shaking) (while the engines running with a new belt) while the belts off look at every pully to see if theres any debree or rough egdes in the pully posibly damaging the belt

To here the symptoms of crank seal leaking, valve covers leaking, etc. etc. that sounds like your crank case pressure is building to high.. In other words your crank case has a breather that allows pressure to escape if the crank case breather is clogged then the pressure will escape else were I.E engine seals. I'd imagine your cam shaft seals even spit out some oil.

With it leaking coolant im assuming its leaking past the water pump housing seal this kinda makes me think perhaps your waterpump is having issues and perhaps intermentently locking up then turning again, locking up then turning again. if this were the case then the drive belt would be just sliding over the waterpump/ fan clutch pully whenever the pump was to stop turning, in turn building massive friction between the pully and the belt, in effect destroying the drive belt... I hope the shop can get it worked out for you..

Sounds like a bad pulley. Either that you you have an accessory that is locking up or causing a tremendous amount of drag. At this point, I sure as hell wouldn't be paying the shop for another one. Newer belts don't typically show wear like old rubber belts did nor do they always squeal when things aren't right.

Do you have the v6 or v8? It sounds like you have a lot of miles on the 4runner and very little maintenance has ever been completed.

I agree, I'd bet on the accessory or an idler pulley locking up.

There has to be some kind of interference in there somewhere... If it was an accessory locking up you would probably at least get some squeal or similar type of warning. Maybe its making contact and chafing somewhere? Have you ever had any kind of front end collision? Maybe something got bent and is contacting the belt. Good luck, hope you find a fix!

Not necessarily. Newer belts don't squeal like the old rubber ones did. They just burn and when they get hot they shred. If something were touching the belt along the way you would see it groove right away and would last minutes not days.

An out of alignment pulley or one that is dragging is the typical cause of a slow death.
