Shrockworks, CBI or Other Swing Out?

So I've been reading about rear tire carriers for hours and I'm at the point where I just want you guys' opinions if you are running either the CBI plate/hybrid rear bumpers with tire carrier or the Shrockworks plate bumper with carrier.

I'm mainly interested in how well the carrier swing is built on each. Does yours latch tightly? does it rattle under normal everyday driving? (I would expect a little movement offroad so that's not a huge deal to me unless it's led to other wear issues). Also, do the spindles on these models have zerk fittings to keep them greased up? Am I right in thinking that the CBI latch is essentially just a bolt with a handle welded to it from the photos I've seen?

I've been on the fence with spending this kind of money on my bumper for a while now. I know if i had the space I could fab one myself, but with a garage addition to the house still a few years away I've gotten impatient. I have shrockworks sliders on my runner now and was satisfied with the build quality but i'm just a little hesitant on something like a carrier with moving parts, hanging weight and a bunch of threads about rattling/etc.

Also, I've narrowed it down to these two but have also looked at Addicted, Irbis, Persson, Perkins and 4x4 Labs to name a few. I'm sure there are others I don't know about. Any advice is appreciated, especially if there is a bolt-on rear bumper/carrier combo out there I'm not aware of that can be had for under $1500 finished in powdercoat.

4xinnovations has a option for a rear tire carrier as well. Looks like its 1110.00 with tire carrier. I would ask for some finished pictures of the bumper

I love my CBI. It's very heavy duty and sturdy. The spindle on it is super beefy. It doesn't require much maintenance as far as greasing goes. The latching operation uses a hefty screw in latch unless you request a clamp style latch. I've only ever seen it come loose after a long heavy duty trail. The only thing I don't like about the swing out is that there is no upper support to keep it from bouncing around. For example: there is about a 5 mile stretch of highway I drive to and from work every morning that is really bouncy. The rear tire on the swing arm will cause the arm to bounce, in turn causing my ass end to bounce. I think it has a lot to do with the fact I have a 35" tire back there though. If it were smaller I'm sure I would feel it a lot less. Still, it's annoying.

I wouldn't think twice about buying from CBI again. I love their products and they have great customer service. Afterall, who wouldn't want to buy armor from a company whose name stands for "Can't Break It"

It's not happening because you have a 35" tire back there... it's happening due to the design. Mine does the same thing with my "little" 33, and NateMob noticed the same thing happening with his CBI on a recent wheeling trip.

The only way I can keep the latch on mine from coming loose on washboard roads is to get back there and stomp it tight with the heel of my shoe (which makes it really fun to try and open it later). Otherwise it comes loose 2-3 times a day when I'm on dirt. Again, design.

If I were to do it over again CBI would lose a sale, my local steel supplier would take an order, and I'd build my own.

My brother runs a CBI on his Taco, carries a full size spare 35 swamper, and doesn't have any of the rattling or looseness problems that you guys are talking about....

I would go with CBI. They've been making stuff for years, and they do stand for "Can't Break it".

Actually had this convo with another member the other day, and I think we've come t the conclusion that were going to build. Just better for us fabbers.

I'm a new owner of a CBI plated swing out bumper. As JWaltz suggested, I opted for a desatco latch based on HungWin build. As far as trail use on the latch, that has not happen yet. I'll post some pictures for your consideration of the latch and locking mount. Hope this helps..... 8sm

It's not happening because you have a 35" tire back there... it's happening due to the design. Mine does the same thing with my "little" 33, and NateMob noticed the same thing happening with his CBI on a recent wheeling trip.

I feel like we need to address this issue b/c if they don't know there is a problem they will never fix it for future buyers.

I have the CBI Hybrid with tire carrier and don't have any issues with the latch coming undone. I would think you could just use a small bungee cord and wrap it around to keep it from jiggling lose.

As for the spindle and grease... it uses some kind of oil impregnated brass bushing or something... basically it's maint free.

If it were me I would do CBI again without question. I have hard negative things about Shrockworks and build times... not sure if that was ever resolved but might want to validate the lead time.

Last I checked CBI posted something about bumpers ready to ship.
