Shrockworks rear bumper

Dang, I didn't need another Shrockworks product added to my wish list.

I have three questions about the mechanics of the swing-arm. First, is there a pin that prevents the arm from swinging out on its own if the latch fails? Second, is there a way to prevent the swing-arm from swinging around 180 degrees? Third, if the swing-arm is at 90 degrees, does that allow the rear hatch to open with the swing-arm in a locked position (or how far does it need to swing to get the hatch to open and is it retained in that position with a pin)?

My old '95 yota pickup had a similar bumper with a swing-arm tire carrier. I don't recall exactly how it happened, but one day the swing arm swung around 180 degrees, allowing the tire to leave a nice dent in the side of the bed. Not a big deal on the pick-up, but it might matter more on a 4Runner, particularly for the rear tail light housing.

We have these features exactly. There is a spring loaded drop pin that pins the tire carrier arm automatically just over 90 degrees. This stops the arm from opening any further than necessary, but just enough to allow the hatch to open. It is a bit of a saftey feature, but I cant think of once (that have been informed of anyway) that our latch has failed and allowed the gate to swing open in the 5+ years that I have been here.

I have seen first hand my finace leave the gate unlatched and drive off though, and the pin did exactly what it was intended to do. So, basically the only thing you would have to worry about is opperator error, and we have that covered ; )

If I left the impression that the bumper I had and referred to in my post was a Shrockworks product, I can confirm that it was not. It was a great bumper but I'm not sure the vendor is still in business or not. They were a smaller shop that didn't have a strong Internet or advertising presence.

I think my issue was more likely operator error than a flaw in the bumper, and I'm always looking for ways to reduce operator error. :)

That is a great looking bumper. I have been looking at all the ones online and have found something I didnt like about them.
Would it be possible to either get the wings extended out a little, or put a cut out in the wing to use as a step? Also I was wondering if you would do a two jerry can holder?

As far as customizing the current limited version -

Would it be possible to use diamond plate on the top of the bumper under the rear hatch???
It would provide better traction when you have to stand on the bumper to load/unload stuff on the roof rack. And wouldn't get scratched up like the flat surface on the current design.

At this time, we are not offering a body lift option. But, if we get enough people beating down the doors proving there is enough traffic to design new brackets and a jig to accompany them, we will do so. Time will tell.

as compared w/ CBI's pricing, not bad really. might think of snagging one after I do the lift on my 3rd gen

ALBPM, we have a few orders in for them currently but it looks like yours is due to ship right around the end of the year.

Interesting story I thought I'd share....My fiance usually drives the 4Runner(the majority reason why its so heavily armored ;) ), but while she was inside a neighborhood kid decided it come and start tinkering with the tire carrier on the back of the truck...undoing the latch and fiddling with the drop pin totally sabatoging the thing, resulting in her taking off down the road with an unlatched unpinned tire carrier not noticing until she hears a loud crash!!!

Pulling over she finds a mailbox laying on the ground behind her and spliters of wood all around. The sabatoged tire carrier had swung open and completely obliterated a 4x4 wood mailbox post, but no damage what so ever to the truck or tire carrier!!!

The mailbox owner brushed it off, the kid was reprimanded and from now on I'll be keeping a lock on the latch and trusting NO ONE!

lmao good to know you can use a tire carrier to take out mailboxes. In all good thing the kid got punished for messing w/ a car that was not his nor his family's
 
That is a great looking bumper! I would definitely move this bumper to the top of my list if a body lift option was available.

Its not out of the question, we'd just need a little incintive...maybe someone willing to place an order ;)

We've got the ability to do it and all the measurments, just havent done it yet.

Cool! Well I am still waiting on (and paying off) the front bumper I ordered from you guys so when I get that taken care of I'll give you guys a call.
