Shrockworks Skid Plates - deal or no deal

For the price, I think the Shrockworks setup is a good deal. Considering how many pieces you're getting, and that shipping is included.

But, it's not really a "deal", in that that's their normal price. If you wait for their group-buy that they have once or twice a year, then you'll basically get the powdercoating for free.

Beyond that....you might want to read any of the multiple posts from Unner regarding their gas tank skid, then possibly re-evaluate if it's actually a deal.

Shrockworks group buy is coming up in a month or so...

I have them, but I got them used on a good deal. The front/radiator portion does interfere with the ARB bumper you have - do a search to see what's what I mean. It bolts to the tow hook mounts in the front:

You probably don't need the transfer case skid if you have 2WD. I'm happy with their front, engine, and tranny skid but their transfer case skid won't work right on my 2000 with multimode transfer case. As was previously stated, you'll have to modify the front skid if you have an ARB bumper (which I do).

If I would do it again I would not get the Shrockworks. I would get the Savage set, or another company that makes the radiator to transfer case skids, and get the lil skips gas tank skid.

The shrockworks are pretty solid with the front mounts going to the tow hook location, but they can interfere with a lot of aftermarket bumpers. Mine hits my Addicted Off Road cross member so I had to space it downward a little bit, or you can cut the top of the skid plate off. I had an issue with the transfer case hitting the transfer case skid and causing a clunk. I fixed this by spacing the skids down with some 1/8" Aluminum bar stock.

The gas tank skid is an entirely different beast. Long story short I got the first one delivered and installed, had bad contact issues with the driveshaft and skid. Argued with Shrockworks for MONTHS about whether or not I had contact issues, they "never got" my emails with pictures showing the contact, didn't believe me that there were other members with the same problem(@Bijan), they basically made the entire process a total pain.

I didn't get a resolution until I called them and got very angry with the owner on the phone and told him people build these things in their garage with hand tools, I figured you guys could do a little better with a full on shop. After many months of dealing with their awful customer service I received an updated skid. I Installed it and I still had rubbing issues. I took it off and took an angle grinder to it until the rubbing stopped. At the time I also had the run of the mill LC rear shocks so this never should have been a problem.

That's my opinion.

Save your money. Give Roy a call over at Savage. Full skids minus the gas tank skid for half the price. That's what I run and they are bomber. For what you're doing a gas tank skid is overkill. I like overkill but not 500 dollars of overkill.

Agreed, the cost difference between Savage and Shrockworks (Rad, engine, trans) is only about $40, Savage being cheaper and bare metal vs. powder coated like Shrockworks

For what? You really need to bash the stock ones to put a dent in them.
Do the 4WD conversion already then worry about what you'll be climbing on. :humble:

Of course you are right, but you should have seen what my 2-mule for sister sarah locked 4runner did this past weekend (nod to aussie locker and 17" wheels and grabbers) plus I slid over a bunch a rocks that real skids and sliders would have reduced the pucker-factor on

I really appreciate you sharing that story and can empathize with the pain you went through. How utterly frustrating. Probably gonna skip the gas tank skid tho.

The RCI works well with the ARB . Available in steel or aluminum too. 20161209_164729.jpg

You shouldn't call your sister a mule. :hello:

Between the various fitment issues that people have mentioned, front skid not playing nice with aftermarket bumpers, and gas tank skid being a bit of a nightmare, I would find someone else to give my hard earned money besides Shrockworks. I went with Savage. I think that they offer some of the best options for the money. Their design is easy enough to preform oil changes and such. Even the bigger skids are still manageable. And Roy is very easy to do business with.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with powder coating skid plates. To me sliders and skid plates are rattle can items. If they are going to get used, they are going to get scratched. If they are not going to get used, then save your money and put it somewhere else. They are easy enough to wipe down with acetone, prime, then hit with whatever flavor finish you want. I am fond of Rust-Oleum Hammered Silver for skids.

I did RCI black powder coated steel for the AT and transfer case skids and used their unpainted aluminum skid up front (wanted to keep it lite weight as that one comes off a bit more frequently than the other two). The whole thing was around $850 and there are zero compatibility issues with my taco ARB bumper

I am definitely considering the RCI Alum skids. My front eng. skid is stainless steel & the alum would be a perfect compliment so I dont have to deal with rust & painting up here in the Northeast. They also have group buys...

With the right size fasteners, you can put the Shrockworks gas tank skid on there with a bit more clearance by putting the carriage bolts on opposite their directions:

I still haven't flexed it enough to really know if I still have clearance issues though.

The only fitment issue I had was the hole that mounts on the frame side of the gas tank skid - I re-drilled it to fit better on my truck.
