Shrockworks T-case skid rubbing muffler

Finished installing all my Shrock skids last night minus the gas tank skid.

The T-case skid is rubbing on the exhaust tube that runs perpendicular to the direction of travel. It makes an awful sound if you give any throttle besides idle.

Anyone had a similar experience? My idea is to drop the skid and use a floor jack to slightly bend that piece up and out of the way. Obviously that carries a certain risk of messing something up.

I'll try to get a picture up.

Here's a picture. Directly in the center of the pic you can see where the bottom of the exhaust tube is touching the top of the skid

I just stuck some washers between the skid and the frame on the forward-most mounting bolts... solved the problem. Just in case anyone ever has a similar situation :)

Nice to see your starting to make a dent in the armor you order haha. How do you like the skids? Thinking about going with them next.

Have you thought about sending a copy of that photo to Shrockworks? Maybe they'll refab so that problem doesn't exist on future skid plates.

Sweet. I like them so far. I mean, performance-wise there's not really anything I can say except they seem solid.

I really need to do a writeup on the install. Besides painting, the install is pretty straightforward. I went with the Rustoleum hammer tone paint. BTW, if you use the "black" it actually ends up coming out about like the magnetic gray metallic color... no worries for me there! :D That paint is tough stuff though and should hold up pretty well.

The gas tank skid, which everyone says can be a b!tch, wasn't all too bad. There's a rear bolt next to the driveshaft that you mount to replace the OEM gas tank support strap pin. IMHO it works best if you follow the directions in order then once you get to that step, take a floor jack from the rear of your truck and jack up the skid even more, taking on the weight of the tank as well.

Even when doing that, the natural curvature of the support strap combined with enclosed space will make it hard to maneuver this support strap into position to line it up for the bolt to fit through. If you didn't jack up the skid/tank, no way you'd ever get it I don't think.

I should also add that just the added weight of skids and sliders caused a barely noticeable sag in my suspension. Just something to consider in case, like me, you're going to be adding even more weight down the road... you can adjust as you go.

Hit me up with any questions on the install.

Glad the install went good. I will definitely hit you up if I order the skids. Probably be placing an order after Christmas.

I would take a pry bar to the exhaust hangers and bend them down/up to hold the exhaust higher. Bend the one at the frame up or bend the one welded to the pipe down. I would probably do the one at the frame first and see what you can get to happen.

Remember, when you're done, you need to check if the noise is still there when you shift into drive or reverse. That's when you'll probably noticed it the most.

I'll try that. Thanks for the tip!

Duc is speaking from experience as his shop recently fixed this problem for me! Only what I thought was the exhaust rubbing was actually the factory "skid" on the transfer case. Removed that and no more rubbing and no more horrible vibrations.

Yeah it's not the instructions but it should be. I removed that prior to discovering this rubbing.

I hate resurrected a dead thread but wanted to add a data point from my recent experience with the Shrockworks skid plates (engine, transmission and transfer case).

After installing the skids, I took a quick test drive and for some reason, the whole test drive felt "off" and this thread helped me solve it. Nowhere in the instructions (as of Feb. 2017) does it tell you to remove the factory t-case skid. Good thing it was an easy removal job as I only had to loosen up the rear two bolts to get more access to the factory plate. After I removed it, sure enough there was rubbing wear. Took another test drive and it seems like the vibration when shifting gears and rubbing sound while driving disappeared.

I'll be on the lookout for the exhaust pipe because it is clearly touching or very close to touching the t-case skid.

My transfer skid actually made contact with my transfer case and made a mean grinding sound at certain points. So i just cut a little out to clear it and the sound was gone.

This is happening with my RCI skids too.

You can slip a radiator hose clamp around the exhaust hanger, tighten it up, and this can raise your exhaust cross pipe and reduce the vibration clatter. It worked for me, and was a relatively simple and cheap fix.

Haha- 7 years later and Shrockworks still hasn't updated the instructions to remove the little factory "skid".

Been chasing that noise for awhile only in reverse....I also thought it was the exhaust, especially after getting some small rocks caught between the skid and exhaust pipe. Added some spacers to give a littlemore clearance and the noise was still there....
