SIAP: Electric Latch on Rear Hatch (2004 Model)

I'm in desperate need of help with this - having a real hard time figuring it out.

The rear hatch door, it has an electric assisted latch of some sort, and it has quite working. Naturally this means we are no longer able to access the 4Runner through the rear hatch - a real pain in the arse.

Anyone else run into this problem?

How do I get to it to even try to take it apart and release it so I can work on it if it is stuck closed?

And has anyone tried fixing the latch, or does the entire motor assembly likely have to be replaced once I find my way in there?

Any help is greatly appreciated in advance.

If I remember the back panel comes off and you should be able to manual release the latch, at the doctor right now, will try and check when I finish my timing belt.

I'll give that a try when it is light tomorrow. I'm 6'4" 250 so getting back there today was not easy - but once back there I can get at it a little better in the light.

I've already tried that - got 1100+ hits using "rear hatch latch" boolean search ... you go try it and see how you do with it slick. I'll be grateful for any solid, applicable, results you happen to retrieve and post in this thread. In the meantime, when I started this thread, I applied proper key words in the proper entry form so that someone searching in the future might have better luck than I, when it comes to searching for answers to this particular problem in this forum at a later date.

Finally, you contributed nothing to solving the problem, nothing to the forum, nothing to the thread with your reply. You were absolutely zero help. Wasted effort - worthless. You would have been better just staying out of it rather than being a search engine snob on this forum.

Also, I started the subject line with "SIAP" which, I am probably incorrectly assuming, you are aware of its meaning. It's an acronym for "Sorry if already posted," and I sincerely meant that but rest assured, I tried several search strings before finally swallowing my pride and asking the question knowing full well that some search engine snob was going to do exactly what you did.

In the meantime several great community members have PM'd me with some advise in addition to providing me with one link to something I was looking for with regard to a DIY motor replacement project for the back latch.

Now, THOSE community members were incredibly helpful, and I owe them ... them and anyone else who might have experience with this problem. There may be others who have joined the forum recently who have also already dealt with this - and to them, thank you in advance for any advice or direction you might add to this thread.

Yeah, well I'm an old geezer too but my Mamma taught me manners back in the 50s and 60s. I'm also well versed in Boolean search syntax methodology, as I stated when I began this thread, and I used the search engine and had to wade through 100s of threads, many of which where the almost identical question was asked to no avail, with no replies, regardless of multiple bumps. Which, in retrospect, was probably the polite thing to do - rather than doing what you chose to do.

I'm sure you've contributed something to this community over the course of your tenure here - but you totally failed to do so in this thread. My bet is that you have no idea about the subject matter of this thread - you just felt inclined to take the time to post the smarmy snarky "do a search" post thinking you were somehow teaching this old geezer a lesson. meh
