Manual Hatch release/latch

Having issues with my rear hatch, actuator seems to release, but its not opening.

Loads of threads on the topic so will attempt a fix this weekend, but has anyone ever replaced the OEM latch with a manual one to avoid the electrical/actuator issues?

I have read a modification to attach a pull cord to the latch mechanism for inside truck hatch release (camping). The write ups were kindly presented with lots of photos by the inventor.
Finding a suitable finished cut for inside hatch shell not fully resolved for the pull cord. You can search the 2 runner forums and internet-I am sure you will see it.
If you want a lockable outside handle I have not seen anything.
I agree the standard outside handle and electric release is a PIA.

Yep, saw that one, I've just left the plastic tab off the hatch trim to get it open for now until I have time. It seems to work for a bit then refuse.

Mine would unlock then immediately lock and the door couldn't be shut because the latch was closed. I had to use a screw driver to open the latch while I held the door button. I took the latch off and cleaned it up, lubed it. I haven't had any issues for several months. I had tried squirting lube into the mechanism but that didn't work. I had to remove it.

I had to force mine open from the inside with my feet. I think I removed the plastic cover from the inside first to get penetrating oil on things but it's been a few years. As for a manual latch, not worth it in my opinion as it could still rust up and get stuck. A new latch on Amazon is in the $40 range. What I did do on mine, until the latch was a reasonable price, was to attach a switch directly to the motor so I could tension and un-tension with that switch. Most likely once the latch is free, the motor will pull the door in, then release but it won't stay latched which is how mine was and why I did the temp switch that I used for 2 or 3 years.
