Side Exit Exhaust

going to have 2 happy dogs hanging out the rear on the drive to the coast this weekend! finally got the side exhaust reroute done. didn't request anything fancy, just cut and welded a 90, bent hanger so it's hidden, coated with high temp paint up to the bend over the axle to blend the 2 pieces back together

drove home for lunch after, got to test for smells with various open-window configs while taking off from red lights, accelerating hard up to hwy speed, and jabbing at the accelerator a bit. couldn't smell anything but "clean" Houston air!

Thanks, just $40 which I thought was reasonable. The paint came after, just stayed tight to the pipe and used a piece of cardboard behind to catch any minor overspray (was not a very controlled or sophisticated method but effective enough)
I only regret not doing it sooner

Affordable Muffler on Dairy Ashford just south of I10. Nice guys, there wasn't any measuring or precise artistry involved, but I was confident it would turn out alright because i was there watching for the 30 min or so it took.
We looked it over and I gave him the general guidelines: basic 90 deg bend, no tip, black paint, and they did the rest.
The one thing I'm glad I was there for was the placement of the new rear hanger. The bend in the new pipe is in front of or before the final hanger mount. They were about to weld the hanger straight down (making it visible from the rear). I suggested bending the hanger and welding it on top of the new pipe to give a cleaner look. Minor thing but more aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks for the idea guys! I'm definitely going to do this to mine. Try to keep the gas smell out of the inside with the rear window down.

I'm going to do this.

With a baby on the way I built a platform in the rear hatch area for the dog to ride, but can't roll the rear window down when the truck is in motion due to the exhaust smell/hazard.

I knew I wanted to add a 90 bend to the pipe to go out the side instead of straight back, but wasn't sure where to start, never done a mod like that before.

Holy cow man, I've called 6 local muffler shops and they all want upwards of $100.00 to do this...

Anyone in CO know a good shop near Green mountain area that would do this for a reasonable fee.

I was figuring $50-$75 bucks.

well time to update from my previous posts. pipe was looking pretty nasty as i did a poor job of painting originally. it also hung down much lower than it needed with the hefty bumper. got a new pipe welded on a few inches higher and hopefully i did a better job priming/painting than round 1.

Why not cut it right after the axle so it points down and won’t get smashed over and over again?

[MENTION=49966]mikey's2010SR5[/MENTION] i just roll with my dog and all the windows down a lot so i like the side exit, too paranoid about carbon monoxide to dump it, only sticks out about 1/2 the tire width and i've never actually crunched the pipe
