simple octane question

As you get older you tend to forget these things. I have a 90 4Runner V6 4WD and the manual states use 91 research octane (87 octane). I can never remember what the pump says, so should I use 91 or 87?

Yes exactly right. The posted octane on the pump is R+M / 2
