Grateful for any guidance experienced 4Runner owners can give me for the following.
Just bought a new to us 2011 4Runner Limited. Love it so far, with one big exception.
It came with what I understand are the stock wheels: 7" rims with 245 60 20 Bridgestone tires.
Our previous rig was a Suburban, with 265 70R 20s (IIRC).
So I feel like we're now riding on bicycle tires. Wife has driven car twice, and says it feel "tippy".
So I want to put, for lack of a better term, "wider" tires on it.
I've read many of the threads here about putting 275 55 20s on the stock 7" rims, but I have concerns about the safety. So let's say that's a non-starter.
Assumptions:
- Have to buy new rims.
- Have to buy new tires.
- Prefer to do zero modifications to vehicle (other than maybe something simple, like spacers, etc).
- 99% of driving is highway, with lots of rain, sometimes snow (Pacific NW). No off-roading.
- Would like a beefier tire, with more road contact.
Questions:
- Are 17" rims the way to go, in terms of having more tire options?
- What would be the "best" rim width to get? 8"? 9"?
- Based on the rim advice, what would be the most reasonable tire size?
Apologies if any of these questions are stupid. I've never had to change rim sizes on a vehicle, and so obviously not away from the stock size to non-stock..
