Sirius/XM ... again

Thanks for all the helpful replies .. I guess they'll say anything to get someone to sign up again.

Got an e-mail from them this A.M. ... $25 for 6 months.

Reaching sexual maturity in the '60's, which, btw was the best decade ever, I did like Channel 006 ... It brought back lots of good memories!

I had them about 7 years and got tired of the dance for the better rate so I cancelled them about 6 months ago (better music on my phone etc) after 20 minutes of no on the phone, never again!

Nice that the 4Runner came with it but I will not be renewing that one ;)

Headliner removal

For me, I just use Pandora or the 128gb of music on my phone, that's plenty enough for me to keep me entertained! For me, there's really no reason to pay for XM, as I've found similar stations through Tune-In and Pandora as I used to listen to on XM.

Pic's would have been great. This is not your typical mod that most people would know how to do.

Yes, there are lots of devices that hold a lot of music and interface with the audio system. I'll have to explore this.
 
I pulled the rubber seal from the hatch, pulled the side plastic panels from around the windows and a few other things that needed to come out to get them to release. I pulled the headliner down just enough to get my hand in there with the socket (no ratchet, just the socket, it wasn't that tight at all). Pulled everything out very carefully without damaging the headliner.

Luckily, there's that blue connector which is clipped into the roof, so once you get that disconnected, the antenna just pops right out, cable and all!

As I said, I spliced into the coax from the 4R, although you could just buy adapters and make it work that way. I did it this way because signal loss in long stretches of coax at ~1.2Ghz is pretty great and I wanted as short a cable as possible. It also didn't help that the Pioneer coax was not nearly long enough to run back to the head unit without an extension, so I figured why not just use the toyota coax!

Couldn't agree more. After three years of terrible reception, several trips to the dealer and calls to Sirius/XM and finally a complaint to Toyota HQ, the dealer has finally fixed it by replacing the antenna. The replacement looks similar to the original but the finish is different than the original. I have a '12 TE and I think the original was black, not body color, but I can't remember. The new one is black with a textured finish. My guess is they replaced it with an after market antenna or an updated unit from Toyota. My reception is now flawless, only losing reception in parking garages. It used to drop signal if a bird flew over.

Permanent reception issues

I think my problem is different than others because I get no satellite reception after about 15 seconds. AM, FM, and Nav are fine. I've contacted Sirius/XM and they indicated that my radio is likely faulty, specifically some type of receiver module?? It would seem to me that everything would use the same antenna/receiver and all would either work or not work. I just don't know enough about these units to know if the satellite radio operates off of a different antenna. I'll be taking it in for an oil change in the next month so I'll have the dealer address.
 
Sirius/XM

I too get drop outs from their signal every day. I can hardly stand it anymore! When I go under bridges or near tall trees, the signal drops out and it's really frustrating. Not sure if I'm going to renew when my subscription runs out. The classic rock channels are very good though... tough decision.
 
Years back, before the two companies merged... XM was always the best sounding and w/the best reception (Sirius always sounded a bit flat/muffled and dropped its signal more frequently). One of the big differences back then was that XM had ground repeaters, Sirius did not. And for those wondering what is a "ground repeater", it rebroadcasts the signal.

After the merger as SiriusXM, i noticed the quality of sound and reception reverted back to typical Sirius. However, over the last few years, both signal and sound has definitely improved.. or maybe I'm just getting old & deaf?

$100 million isn't much — about the cost of Howard Stern's salary for a year.
I wonder if they get more complaints about him than they do outages.
 
It may just be me but I've noticed that when my signal drops 90% of the time I am facing south. I don't know if this has to do with my location (the northeast) or just dumb luck.
