Skid Indicator, VSC Off, VSC and Check Engine...

I fired up my 2005 T4R today, and all these lights went off! I read some threads on this in other forums (didn't see any here) and it seems like the GAS CAP can cause all this chaos with your skid control!

Not sure what the Japanese engineers were smoking when they tied the gas cap sensor to the VSC lights, the skid light AND THE check engine light. Had I not researched it, I would have been rushing to my local stealership and forking over good money for them to diagnose. Crazy.

So I went out to the 4Runner after researching and sure enough, the gas cap comes off WAY to easily. It will snap several times like I'm tightening it, but it does not actually tighten up. It just slips off as if I had set it on the filler hole.

Just ordered an OE Stant cap from Rockauto for $8.49. Will let ya'll know if that does not work.

My 2007 did this a few days ago. Replaced the gas cap and they went off.

Well, I already ordered the Stant OE. I guess if it doesn't work, I'll return it and get a toyota one (at four times the cost).

About 18 months ago I tried the Stant one. Worked for a tankful then I had to order an oem one. Picked it up on Amazon for cheap.

I wonder why a Stant will not work. Mine is doing this as well, I replaced with a Stant with zero joy.

For those that have replaced the gas cap because of this issue...are your lights coming on and staying on no matter what, or do they come on while driving and are then off when you start the car back up?

These lights come on in my wifes 2006 Sport, while driving, and then are off when the car is turned off and started back up.

Glad to see knee jerk diagnosis and part replacement is still the "proper" way to fix cars on forums.

Sorry, I apologize for rather rude way my above response came across, its been a rough day and this type of "fixing" is a pet peeve of mine (which is why I make the above thread detailing what those lights mean and why a gas cap may or may not be the cause.)

That being said, I had an issue where my gas cap was tight and clicked, but actually loosened up by itself over time. I ended up getting a Toyota gas cap for about $24, this was AFTER I had already confirmed that the DTC I was getting was in fact a P0455 and that the EVAP system was not having any issues.

well I stopped by Advance Auto yesterday and they let me use their code reader to see I had one code stored.

P0031 heated oxygen Sensor
Heater Control
Circuit Low Bank 1
Sensor 1

2004 V8 4x4 runner. I am assuming this means drivers side post CAT Oxy sensor is bad, I am wondering do I have the right Oxy sensor location as there is 4 total I believe. Anyone know off the top of their head?

ps, I tried a stant gas cap, then toyota one new, no joy. then went to Advance. Oh well, have a new gas cap.

No! it is the O2 sensor in FRONT OF your cat....thus PRE-CAT.
That's more serious as it actually communicates back to the ECU, which in turn makes changes to A:F.

The post cat (doesn't communicate back to the ECU for change purposes) is P0136.

Sorry my bag (i deleted my last mistake message), sensor 1 bank 1 drivers side upper.
just remember senor one is the number one driver side and bank one is the first one to go (meaning first inline of CAT) since it is the hardest also.
