skid plate install

Sorry if this is a repeat thread, couldn't find anything....

I purchased a used skid plate off eBay, came off same yr 4R. Everything lines up to my 4R although just the bottom bolts on the mounting bracket won't tighten more than 1/2 way and the top bolts don't have threads to bolt onto the car :wtf:


Suggestions?

Nuts and washers always worked for me on the ones that have been striped out or the one That the welded nut had been broken off...

it has welded nuts on one side of the bracket, that mounts to the plate.
The plate came with 2 smaller bolts that can slide into the frame of the truck, but don't tighten to the frame, which is boxed in, can't get a nut behind the bolt! :bash:

Have you tried longer bolt most of the OEM bolt don't get the last few threads and longer one may get you what you need.

The factory skids are mounted with really crappy self-tapping bolts. When I swapped my skid, a few of them snapped off right in the hole and a few others were cross-threaded. I ended up drilling out and retapping the holes in order to mount mine.

You would need a rivnut tool for this or a DIY method. It would not be the best solution but if you are only doing a few, it might be the cheapest way to go..

If you want a proper tool, one like this might work. it is multi-functional so you are not only limited to rivnut. It uses rivet and rivnut. Maybe a good investment if you need rivet function also.

correcto on the rivnuts. Need two of them, I bought a skid used as well and the two empty holes will need these before you can put a bolt in. I made a tool to expand them from a simple bolt and a nut slightly larger. Pretty simple to do. McMaster Carr was the only place I could find them in the size I needed and cheap. I looked forever. All auto parts stores and industrial suppliers. I posted a thread in the how to section I think, Ill search and give you a link.

that has some info..

this one is my thread and has a picture of the rivnut and the "tool" I 'made'. If you notice the nut is slightly larger than the bolt, which allows the bolt to spin freely inside it when you put a wrench on each. This will pull in the rivnut and butterfly the sides of it out which you then remove the 'tool' and install your bolts. Works kind of like drywall anchors.

rusted front skid plate

I have a question about the front skid plate. I just purchased a 2005 V8 4Runner & went to the Toyota dealership for an inspection & oil change & they said they couldn't change my oil unless they removed the front skid plate. Well it's so rusted I guess, that they will have to break it. What's a good replacement skid plate for it? Just basic driving, no off roading whatsoever.

There's an opening in the skid plate where you can get to the oil nut. No need to remove the whole skid plate for an oil change.

Skid plate removal is required for a filter change on the V8

well, if its a daily driver you really don't need the skid plate. As far as breaking the bolts. I did a thread on how to drill them out if you want to put a new skid back on.

For me, I know you don't offroad, so either look on ebay for a stock skid plate or go with something like a budbuilt skid. its thinker and meant for offroad, but its also brand new and readily available.

Thanks! I just purchased the vehicle & that skid plate is in rough shape & it had the oil changed about 10,000 miles ago, I can't believe it got that rusted in just that amount of time. I thought there was a way to get to it without removing it, but wasn't sure. I will figure out if I want to replace it or not because it's gonna get taken off because it's so rusted.
