Skid Plate Options

I'm trying to find a good set of skids. Both main options have benefits but which would be better for a less aggressive wheeler? It's always been a concern of mine that I would stick something up there and have it ruin something. I generally stay off of major trails, but plan on going to the desert later this year and wanna make sure everything is safe. Any ideas which would be the better option?
 
Imo , there is not a less aggressive skid. I would agree with masphx the BudBuilt skids cover the cat more so than the Savage skids. The risk of running over something off road increases exponentially the further you travel off a set trail road on to more aggressive terrain. Like wise, the risk on a desert trail access road compares to that of driving down any city streets. We ran for a number of years without armor and without incident. Having armor allows one to extend their personal limits. For me the limits remain the same yet should I need to take a different line to get home, the risk of damage is lessen.

I emailed Savage but got no response, from the looks of the pics on the site the welding spots/connections do not look very clean, not sure if its just dirty or what also can anyone tell me if its a direct bolt on and is hardware included? Can you get to the oil drain plug and filter without removing the skids?

I was going to just buy a stock skid from a 1st gen Tacoma but these are hard to find in my area.

The Savage welds looked good with proper penetration , they are direct bolt with supplied hardware and you can remove one easily accessible skid section when changing oil. IMO, not a huge issue.

Just got my Savage skids delivered, much heavier than I thought they would be, do you guys get an alignment after putting these on? Now that I have them I'm wondering if they are overkill for my non lifted runner, the only off roading I do is on the beach and I'm thinking I should have just gone with the Tacoma skid?
 
So im about to buy the savage :) and then I see the 3-4 weeks fab time, just wondering if this amount of time is more or less correct. Thank you for your time.

That's right, every where will have some sort of lead time. Did you check out RAT products skids? I have them and they are pretty stout. isu2014 can hook you up my post in my build thread has his info.

It might be a PITA to purchase all over again but there are people out there that sale 1/8" (10gauge) steel skids. These are considered light duty as the ones you have now are 3/16" steel. I know budbuilt sales 1/8" skids. There's a new member that just joined that sales 1/8" skids as well.

Any thoughts on these being too heavy for a daily driver/%95 on road use? I just might have to put them on and see how my Runner drives with them on.
Wait time was about a month, not too bad, if your concerned about it order them ASAP and they will arrive before you know it. If you decide you don't want them I'm sure you can sell them quick - I've had 5 offers already since I first posted this morning...

It took right at about three and a half weeks for me to receive mine. Unfortunately they've just been sitting in my front entry way since they showed up a week ago.
 
Never had the chance to install these - just too much for a daily driver, I'm trying to sell my Ssvage skids if anyone is interested, I'll give you a good price...
 
I love my Savage skids. Put them through one hell of a beating this last weekend. My oil/transmission pan/transfer case would be toast without them. Too bad he doesn't have a gas tank skid, cause I'd buy one of those too. Gonna have to get the Lil Skip one for that.
 
Has anyone tried the Shrockworks skid plate set? They seem heavy duty (and heavy) 3/16" steel with good coverage. They sell a 5 piece set for a little over $1000 with free shipping. Any advice is helpful for a newbie like me. I'm new to 4 wheeling but am building my t4r to be ready for anything. Thanks
 
Custom skid that I just finished. 3/16" plate and added gussets on the bends. Should be able to take one hell of a beating
