Skid Plates paint/color?

I'm about to get my skid plates from the RCI GB:whoo: in a couple of days and was trying to figure out the best route to paint them? I know a lot of people just rattle can them but i was thinking of painting them with POR - 15 for the base coats and then rattle can over that, what are your guy's thoughts on these since i have 0 experience with either?

Also i was originally thinking to just paint the skids flat black like most do but then part of me thought it might be cool to paint them titanium metallic ( silver) to match the truck? Thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

Tell you what. I went and did the whole rhinoliner thing with my budbuilt skids - see here:

And the damn liner is peelin off like crazy after only mild scraping/use. Could be entirely user error (may not have cleaned the bare metal the right way before lining it), but I am very unimpressed by its durability for an application such as a skid plate. I plan on running a wire brush/grinder, stripping it all and then just using rustoleum this time.

Id do them with something relatively inexpensive and readily available, that way when you do scrape them to hell, it won't be too hard to repaint and repair. i actually just talked to [MENTION=55855]zopperman[/MENTION] about this yesterday

POR 15 is very durable and a good choice for skids since they will be under the truck and not exposed to light, but if you smash it on a rock, the POR 15 is coming off and that stuff is $$

I'm thinking about color matching the front of my LCA skids just because they will be visible with the bumper and stuff, but I may just do a gunmetal for ease of touch ups and a little contrast. The color matched paint is expensive too, though I am a huge proponent of the stuff from Automotivetouchup.com

Why not do about 3 coats of POR 15 to seal, then take it to LINE-X for physical protection? They quoted me ~$100 to do my stock skids.

I just finished painting mine yesterday and used rattle cans which is always my choice for easy touchups. I thought about POR-15 since I have some but decided it would be a waste of expensive paint.

Nothing will stay on when you drag across some rocks, if you wheel your 4Runner I suggest rattle cans.

You will not believe this, i painted it yellow. It turned out okay actually, funny though but unique. I have the silver paint on my car.

I just figured the Por 15 would be a good base since it's supposed to adhere to metal really well and also used as a rust preventer, and then rattle over top of that but of course nothing you put the skids will last and yes i will be properly using them on rocks and such.. Then just re touch as needed down the road with rattle can as needed

For those of you who have ever used Por 15 should i prime the skids first or just paint straight to the metal?

@ Zopperman i was also thinking of if i where too paint the skids silver to also paint my BAMF lca skids to match, i think it would pretty good idk what do you guys think Silver or Black?:decision:

I probably would avoid coating skids with any bedliner type coatings...you want skids to slide over the obstacle as easily as possible, not give it more traction to grip, lol. I had mine powder coated just because I am too lazy to do all the prepping and painting, but I plan to just spray paint over whatever powder coat I scrap off as time goes by. I guess I don't really care if it matches or not since its under the truck, who's gonna see it.

Don't stress yourself about making the protective coating perfect the first time around, I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunities to fix it in the future when you take them off to refresh the paint job from time to time. 3/16" sheet steel is not going to rust through that fast so you will have ample time to fix it before it's too late

I plan to use duplicolor Bedliner that can be found at Wally world. Its really just slightly textured paint nothing too thick or rubberey. I've used it on bumpers and trailers. It holds up well and just takes a slight scuff to recoat.

Someone somewhere recommended VHT Chassis paint. I used it on my bare metal crossbars for my roof rack and WAS NOT impressed at all. I could scrape off with my fingernail with minimal effort. Perhaps I was doing something wrong? Zero primer was used...

It would be nice if such a paint existed but there's no paint I'm aware of that is stronger than a rock dragging across steel. That's why I rattle can mine, just spray and the scar is (kinda) gone.

A kid who graduated last year from my high school (I know, im just a high school senior ) had a beautiful grey '93 pickup with yellow skids. Looked great. :worthless

I just primed mine and used Rustoleum Gloss White because I think it looks cool. I had my factory skids painted white as well and just sprayed them with a hose and repainted every oil change or so.

Ok so i picked up my skids earlier i have a quart of Por-15 which i'm going to use as a base even though i'm sure this won't hold up like anything else going over rocks i'm just being stubborn and wanna try it out,and i'm still not sure what color i'm going to paint over Black/Silver i'm being indecisive idk why you can't really see them but i'm pretty particular about color combo's and things looking and flowing good together even though there just gonna get scraped up lol! Gonna do this tomorrow and mount them up i will try to take some good pics for you guys...
