Sleeping in the back setups?

I'm considering removing the back seats altogether and building a platform 30" wide and 6" high on the driver's side. 6 inch memory foam cut out around the wheel well with about 2 inches of foam left on top of the well. Leaves lots of room for other items in the back with the seats removed.

Ive been sleeping in the back during long overland trips since 2016 and Ive been full time sleeping in the back since jan 2022 this is my most current setup.
Custom platform with rear seats deleted
GoKot Kot that folds down very nice and stores away small if I need the space for something else
Thermarest pad on top sleeping bag and blanket

The only thing Ive used better or more comfortable than the GoKot is this fold up 4in memory foam matt from Amazon Amazon.com: Olee Sleep 4 Inch Tri-Folding Memory Foam Topper, Single size : Home & Kitchen

My solution happened incidentally. I had a stack of 5-6 large U-Haul boxes laying flat in my trunk (unused from a previous move).

They happened to fill the height differential perfectly.

I slept with a simple/cheap camping blow-up mattress on top of the stacked boxes. It was comfortable and level.

Great setup for minimal cost and effort!

Any better pics of the road bike holder? I've been thinking of building something similar that would let me put the road bike inside the vehicle and keep the 40 or 60 seat upright for my daughter to sit.

I have slept with my mountain bike inside the 4R. I have my rear seats completely removed (not necessary). Take off the front tire, lower the seat (mtn bike with dropper seat post), roll the bike in backwards till the rear tire touches the back of the drivers seat, bungee the back tire to drivers seat headrest post, secure the front fork to a floor mounted fork mount. Or, instead of fork mount on floor use additional bungees on the front with the various D rings and mounting points in the back of the 4R and put a towel, rags or foam under the front fork. Should be good to go!

Unfortunately no, It was pretty simple. I had a front fork mount bolted to the top of the drawer box and two inverted small rubber feet/pads (Ace hardware I think ) mounted under where the bottom bracket sat along with a bungee to hold the bracket snug to the deck. I omitted the 60 side of the seats attached is a pic from the drivers side with a few chain tattoos…. I also had the 40 seat bottom out and the seat back down with refrigerator strapped on top. Worked great even off roading. A bit of a pain to get bike out. but safe when left unattended and out of the weather on a trip up the west coast…Oregon rain!

Interesting enough, I just made a video on this.

Went to Mojave last year in about 28 degree weather and slept pretty comfortably with a very inexpensive setup. Really love sleeping in the back of the rig and not dealing with tents.

I did the same thing. Got the idea from a guy at the tire store. Comfortable, versatile, cheap and disposable.

I use the sleeping pad from deep sleep overland. It is designed to fit perfectly in the 4Runner. It’s an inflatable mattress with a memory foam core and it has the best insulation you can get. It’s a bit pricey but it’s extremely comfortable.

Nothing fancy, just took some plywood I had laying around, covered it in carpet and made some footings out of scrap 2x4. It makes a perfectly flat surface that I just use my Thermarest pad on to sleep. Works great for weekend bonsai fishing or hunting trips

Still like the SWW? Thinking of getting one myself for my 5th gen. I don't need to sleeping extension as I have RTT. Should I get false tops or just make them myself?

Also interested in that water container. Looks like it can accept a hose and might be pressurized?

if you want your drawers more custom, "overlanderwoodworks" is their IG handle and theyre located in norwalk.

solidwoodworx, no custom and you get it as is with the platform. I dont think he'll discount if you dont need it. the drawers come with the falsetops. options to get one with aluminum top. thin piece glued to the wood.

i still like it. use it frequently with all my stuff.

the jerrycan is a plastic one from frontrunner. im sure you can find a cheaper one elsewhere since their products are marked up like crazy.
or get that dometic pump thing and attach it or make it yourself.

i got the superlite so i wont be sleeping inside the car any longer

built a leveling platform out of 1/2" wood using (3) cut down 2x4's for legs. It's bolted down in (4) locations to the vehicle where the original D-rings are and has a slide out table that I use all the time. I also removed the 60% back seat and built a platform this time using some metal legs I welded together that bolt to the original (4) seat mounting points.

I covered the entire thing in some indoor/outdoor fabric I found at Home Depot that basically matches the interior so the entire thing looks surprisingly OEM. When I camp in there I like having the carpet, it's more cozy, although less resilient to water/dirt so something to consider.

After that I use my sleeping pads, but recently upgraded to the Extra Large KLYMALOFT Sleeping Pad. Sorry no pics of everything all together. Just imagine two full size pillows and some blankets all in there

If you're interested in any details let me know, I made some videos or can provide more pictures/information.

I also made reflective window shades for all my windows out of a roll of Reflectix I bought from Home Depot. I punched holes in it along the top so I can keep the windows cracked with my rain deflector thingies and have some air flow. In the summer I have a fan I use.

We slept in the 4Runner for the first time last weekend on the beach.

We used a Luno air mattress specifically for the 4Runner. It was great, and very comfortable, until my side deflated. Luckily we only stayed one night in the 4Runner, and Luno is sending me a new mattress, but still sucked. I will say with the Luno fully aired up, but cant really even feel the unlevel transition in the back of the 4Runner.

I'm 6'3", and have a molle panel on my liftgate, so I was crammed a little, but still doable if you bend your knees. My wife and son are small so that was possible.

We used an Icy Breeze cooler in he front seat for air conditioning, but it got too hot so we actually ran the 4Runner most of the night. With it being a 2020, and with the beach breeze, we didnt worry about fumes.

I don't really have any good pics of the set up except for this one of my hot wife and my son the morning after once we folded up one of the seats.

We also had suction cup fans on the windows, but I need to create a constant power 12v for when the truck is off.

No kidding. 6'1'' me and my gear is enough in the back of the 4R, and that's with a single exped mat with the seat bottoms removed and some gear stored inside as well.

My sleeping setup

My setup is pretty simple, but it works well for me and my wife.

I opted for a folding mattress rather than an air one, it's just a personal preference to avoid the hassle of inflating/deflating it every time. T
he one I have is a Milliard Tri-Fold Foam Folding Mattress (which costs around $100). It fits nicely, though you might have to do a tad bit of adjustment each night. On top of that, I've got some regular bed sheets and a lightweight sleeping bag.

As for the pillow, my wife got 2 Pluto pillows. We decided to get a more premium pillows to make the discomfort of sleeping in the car as comfortable as possible. It's highly adaptable, which means we get to have perfect neck support even in the back of the car.

As for additional storage, I made a DIY shelving unit that fits into one side of the trunk. This gives me space to pack my gear, food, and other essentials.
