Sliders...are there real differences?

I'm looking to add rock sliders to the 4runner and have it narrowed down to RCI, metal-tech, and Shrockworks because they have 2 weeks or less turnaround time while others (Pelfreybilt and c4fab) had 6 week manufacturing time. Called cbi, but never heard back.

Prices are about the same and they're all powder coated. Are there real differences between these brands or is it just cosmetic?

Pretty much cosmetics but mainly the type of material such as HREW or DOM tubing. DOM is a lot stronger. I went with Demello offroad in corona cause I could just pick it up. Been happy with it. You also have to decide if you want a hybrid slider combined with square 2x2 or 2x4 main square tubing with round tubing steps or all round tubing. Also, weld on or bolt on. kick out or no kick out. I went with DO hybrid rock sliders bolt on with 4th gen and weld on with 3rd gen. Been happy with it.

I'm looking at bolt on's with kick out.

Didn't know about HREW/DOM tubing and 2x2 or 2x4. I think most were 2x2. Didn't realize there were other options. I think one manufacturer said their sliders were originally meant for 6,500 lb Land Cruisers and can be used to lift the truck. I figured that was plenty strong enough.

Just goes to show you don't know how little you know until you start learning about it.

I started the same as you. I was actually gonna go with white knuckle offroad but like you said the turn around was lengthy hence DO sliders. They're all pretty much good products. I would narrow it down to kick outs & install type (you already decided) and type of tubing. Good luck!
 
Basically all the same. DOM is stronger but if you aren't going to be bashing them super hard all the time, then HREW will be fine. I built mine with HREW because I had the material already and they have a couple small dings on the bottom but that's it and from pretty hard impacts. They are all basically the same. Just look for the ones that have frame plates and gussets. Idk if any come without those but they are a must

n00b question... what's the difference between rock sliders and the round running boards that came on my sport? material? durability? placement?
 
They others are a weaker construction and are meant to be only a atep

Yes. I've used mine twice now on the sliders, but you have to be ridiculously careful because a hi-lift can easily slip off a slider. Also had that happen once because I was jacking up the rear and the front tire moved just enough. Resulted in some door damage.

Running boards attach to the sheet metal of the vehicle. If you were to hit them with a rock they would bend and likely also bend the rocker panel. When you get home you look under your vehicle and go oh F#%$%


Rock sliders are bolted or welded to the frame. If you were to hit them with a rock you would here a loud bang and some scraping noises. When you get home and look under your vehicle you decide if you want to touch it up with a little spray paint.
 
Demello (Norco, CA) is also local but that's a long drive for you. They do make 5th gen. You can call and see if they have any ready bare metal or powder coated.

RCI are good products. I'm actually looking at there skid plates for next purchase. FYI, there's a group buy happening this fall put on by MStudt

I'm all about the Demello sliders. I like supporting local business. Matter of fact I'm getting sliders installed tomorrow on Lucy Pearl for Saturday's run.
