Slight Shaking

A couple weeks ago my 07 V6 Sport began to shutter slightly when I am sitting at a red light with the brake or just idling. It shakes, then backs off, then shakes (repeatedly). I also feel it just as I turn off the vehicle. I don't really notice anything when driving.

I purchased the 4Runner in February of this year and to this point have had no issues. I am not necessarily an automotive savy fella, so any thoughts or ideas would be apprecaited.

Bump. I also have experienced this and am curious.

If I'm not mistaken, you can also see the RPMs fluctuating a very small amount while this is going on.
 
Any chance your AC compressor is cycling on and off when it happens? I haven't had this occur in my 4R, but have had it happen in a couple of cars I owned.

You know, that would make sense.

This has happened on my Dad's Accord for a while as well. However, his was new enough when it started that I couldn't imagine it'd have that issue already. Perhaps a test run w/ and w/o AC is in order.

Could it be some other accessory driven by a belt (maybe power steering pump or something)?

I doubt it...it would have to be something that is putting a load on the engine and taking it off. The AC compressor is the only thing that would cycle like that while sitting still.

I'm no expert, but unless its something like a spark plug, wire or ignition problem developing the truck electronics are trying to compensate for, I'm not sure what else it could be. But that wouldn't necessarily have a pattern to it. The fact that it seems to have a pattern seems to point to the compressor switching on and off.

Maybe some more knowledgeable folks on the board will have other input....but that's my best guess based on the information provided.

Next time it starts shaking, just shut off the AC and see if it goes away.

Ok, sounds good. Do you think the AC compressor could cycle on and off w/ the AC turned off? Or is this something that could only occur while having the AC on?

Only while it's on. You might even try idling with the AC off, then turning it on. You'll probably see the RPMs drop a little.
 
I had the same thought about the AC. Unfortunately, the temperatures around here are limiting my ability to fully test that thought. My other thought was the spark plugs may be going bad.

Temperature really shouldn't be an issue. Make sure it's not on "auto", set the inside temp to "LO", and turn it on - or turn on your defroster.

Old/worn plugs could cause a rough idle, but that would normally be pretty constant - not like the symptoms you are describing.

Sorry, I should clarify, I meant outdoor temps. The average has been well over 90, so driving around with no AC has been short lived most days. You gotta love a town where the weatherman says outdoor temperature is 92, but feels like 98... seriously, what the hell?

Ahh, heat index...I know what you're talking about...

I can probably clarify as well. You don't need to shut off the AC entirely, or drive around without it. Drive as normal...when you are at a stop light and it starts shaking, just hit the AC button to shut it off and see if the shaking stops. If it does, you know that's the issue and go ahead and put it back on.

If it doesn't, then it's something else....

If it turns out to be the AC compressor, don't worry about it. I checked today, and my 4R reacts when the compressor comes on at a stop as well - it's just so subtle that I don't even think about it....until now...so thanks for that.....:dammit:
