Slip on, VSC off, VSC trac at 25-30mph

Appologies if this has been posted I cannot find it. I know there are tons of posts about vsc but i didn't see any related to vsc and speed.

I JUST bought a 4runner yesterday from a small dealership about an hour away from home. It's an 06 sports edition with only 22K!! The slip, vsc trac, and vsc off lights all illuminate instantaneously once I get between 20-30mph. The lights go off once restarted. Come back on as soon as I'm between 20-30mph. I drove around for 10 minutes below 20mph and didn't have an issue.

It could idle all day and they would never come on. And at this point i feel like I could probably drive across the country under 20 and they wouldn't come on. I really don't want to go back to the dealer that's about an hour away. His warranty only covers half of the issue if it pertains to the safety inspection (I assume this would).

Anyone else having the same problem? I've called every toyota dealer around and they haven't heard anything about it coming on when reaching a certain speed. And of course they all want me to come in and get it checked out. I went to autozone but nothing came up...i was told the check engine would have to be on.

The tire pressure light is on as well...any chance that could cause the problem?


Edit: Just went and checked all the tires. They're all at 34. But the tire pressure light is on. I noticed that I have 1 tire that is different than the other 4 (3 dunlops and a bridgestone)...hmmm...i wonder if whoever replaced it forgot to do something which in turn is causing all of these lights to go off?? Am I crazy?

Have you checked the pressure in your spare?

Not sure about the other issues... something definitely sounds wrong. The tire pressure indicator light does not cause the other warning lights that you describe to illuminate. As chaz alludes to below below, maybe the computer recognizes that you have one mismatched tire and illuminates the warning lights.

I know it's a PITA to bring it back to a dealer an hour away, but you made quite an expensive purchase. I'd suggest bringing it back. It could be something as simple as a gas cap or new tires, but it could also be something serious.

Make sure your gas cap is tight. My freinds did this when it was loose but I do not think it came on only at a certain speed and it stayed on.

That's a good question. I'll have to check when my wife gets home. Do you think that could possibly create an issue?

I just read somewhere else about the spare. That'll be the first thing I check tomorrow AM.

I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes today. The lights haven't come back on yet but i'd imagine the system takes a certain amount of miles to figure it out again.

It's driving perfectly fine...which makes it hard for me to believe that something is seriously wrong.

I did check the gas cap. It clicks on just fine...seems to open up easier than I would think...but that's probably normal?

The whole speed thing is whats throwing me off here...

I'd be furious if I bought a vehicle and it had problems like this so quick, I'd bring it back.

Did you test drive it before you purchased it?

You might need a new cap if it does not have resistance when you take it off. You can turn the gasket around and that might be a temporary fix. I do not think that is what is causing the lights to go on. You might look at the wires going to the speed sensor.

I did. And the lights were on then. I didn't know anything about them. Thought that it was just a feature of the car. Something that a button would fix. It's really my fault.

But the dealer is a little shady. He's a car flipper. Mostly high end. Talked to him today and he told me to bring it to my mechanic and call him back. I'm hoping he'll just cover it. It was an issue before i even bought it. I'm wondering how it passed safety inspection. I bought it with a new sticker. Had just been inspected. That doesn't seem right does it?

Most likely that different tire is taller or shorter than the other three. If it is a larger or smaller diameter it will cause the wheel speed sensor to read different speeds, than the other 3. Ive seen the same size tires not be the actual size across different brands. Thus the computer thinks the wheel is locking up or spinning, depending on the tire diameter. Which confuses the crap out of it and it turns those features off, hence the warning lights. Id plan on buying a set of tires and have a toyota dealer pull the codes in the abs/traction module to see if thats the case. You may actually have a wheel speed sensor, module, instrument cluster or any other count less sensors failed in the vsc system.

That's starting to make more and more sense. I just bought 4 new tires for my Tundra too. Sh*t.

However, since disconnecting the battery...we've put probably close to 40 miles on it without the lights coming back on. I think the trip home today will be a good time for them to come back on.
