Small Discovery in 4WD on my Limited

Maybe this is old news and I just never read it anywhere, but... I've been frustrated a little bit with the way the traction control works on this thing, in the snow. I know I can turn off the traction control and it seems to help, in a straight line, but it goes all nutty when you get the least bit sideways. Well, I found that if you hit the traction control button, then immediately hit it again and HOLD it, it shuts off not on the traction control, but the VSC as well, in 2WD or 4WD. Normally, when you just hit it once, the traction controls goes off and the LSD goes off as well. But, that doesn't let you get sideways at all. This way, you can really get the back end around, in either 2wd or 4wd. It won't let you go clear around, but you can get almost 90*.

Anyway, I was wanting to find a way where I could get all the tires spinning without the vehicle going bananas and trying to search for traction while I basically sit still and also a way to be able to have a little fun as well. Or, in an off road instance, be able to get a little sideways here or there without all the braking happening and this is perfect.

I do think you have to be either sitting still, or going really slow though to do it.

Again, it's push, then immediately push again and hold.

Again, maybe old news, but it was a fantastic discovery for me this morning and I can't wait to try this thing out in the blizzard that is bearing down here in Kansas City!!

Where is said traction control button?

I have an 05 SE and I hate the way the beeping and no gas peddle happens.


I wonder if this applies to my model?

button only applies to 2008 and newer 4runners. For anything earlier you have to mod it to turn this feature off. Do a search and you will all sorts of threads relating to VSC mod threads.

My button is on the left side of the steering column. It's the button that looks like light that comes on your dash when you lose traction. It's the traction control button. You may not have it, not sure. Mine goes, AC Button, Diff Lock, Traction Control, The little rollover, airbag light off button, whatever that it called.

Yeah I remember seeing the mod thread on this..no luck in finding it though..I was hoping to find an easy way out here.

I just went out to get my daughter from daycare and holy crap, I'm glad I found this, I was plowing through 2-3' high piles of snow, where the plows had been and never skipped a beat. On the way home and even pulling in the driveway, I turned it off and all I can say is, that sucks. You can't spin the tires to keep your momentum or anything, pretty frustrating. But, with the diff lock button pushed, the VSC off and the traction control off as well, there was not a single issue. I'm ready to go out again!!
