Smaller rims for winter tires?

I'm a mostly a newb when it comes to vehicles - I'm hoping this isn't a stupid question....

I'm looking to purchase winter tires on my 2006 4Runner Limited. I want to buy a separate set of steel rims so that I can easily switch out the winter tires myself. Can I buy 16 or 17" steel rims to mount the winter tires on as opposed to buying 18" rims? My reason for doing this is rubber for smaller rims is usually cheaper from my previous experience... Is there anything I need to consider when doing this or is this even possible?

Also, as far as rims go, I may look on a local used website for the second set of rims. Do I just need something that will fit the 6 bolt pattern? Is there anything else I need to consider??

In doing some reading/searching it looks as though I can do without the tire pressure sensor for the winter rims/tires and save some $$. I just may have to put up with a stubborn light on the dash for the winter. Can someone confirm this?

I previously used a set of 16" steel rims for snow tires on my '03 4Runner. But I hated them. The ride seemed much worse. I'm guessing it was because of the extra unsprung weight from the heavier steel rim.

Last summer, I surfed around a bunch of forums looking for people selling wheels. I found a fellow on an FJ Cruiser forum who was selling 17" aluminum wheels that are the exact same design as the OEM wheels on my '03 4Runner. They were almost brand new. I paid $400 for the set, including shipping from Utah to MA.

Thanks for the replies. I know the bolt pattern is 6x5.5 or 6x139.7 but I am not familiar with the other rim measurements. Can anyone comment as to whether or not these 17" rims would work on my 4Runner?

Sorry, but I don't know. I'd stick with FJ, 4Runner, LandCruiser or Tundra rims -- they should all fit a 4Runner.

I agree... stick with the Toyota rims. You can usually find 4Runner, FJ, Tundra, and Sequoia rims for sale pretty inexpensively on-line or through your local classifieds. The non-4Runner rims have a bigger offset (only by about 1/2") and look great. I'm not sure of their size, but the base FJ Cruiser steel rims would be cool for winter.

Just remember your ecm is progammed for an 18" tire size so your speedo will be off and may effect your transmission shift patterns.

No. The only thing that matters is the outside diameter of the tire. You can switch between 17 and 18" wheels without any issue, provided you size the tire properly so that the diameter is the same (or within a percent or so).
