smoke from dash, fuel gauge wont work now

So this evening I went to flip on my headlights and smoke came from the dash and my fuel gauge dropped to empty and the fuel light kept blinking. I'm thinking fuse?

Everything else seems to be working fine.

I would be more worried about where the smoke came from and why. A fuse may be blown because of that.

I just started the truck up for the 1st time since last night....the fuel gauge went from empty to full but I only have a half tank. weird.

Did someone just bypass a fuse with a wire? You will have to dig a little to find the problem.

Random Thought. Maybe this has something to do with the Airbag recall.

Your radio is probably grounding out your dimmer light circuit causing it to melt the wires messing your fuel gauge circuit.

You really need to find the source of the smoke. More than likely something shorted and melted, and the fuse blew (a little too late). You need to fix that before you replace the fuse.

update:
Not sure what caused the smoke but the fuel gauge is working fine now after I replaced the towing wiring harness this past spring. I'm guessing something with the grounding on the old harness is what caused the wonky gauge.

It's been 4 months and the gauge has worked fine ever since.
