Smoke Test Question on a 2002

So I have the P0440 and P0446 codes. Evap leak! And I bought a smoke machine! Yay me!

This is probably a dumb question, but can I just hook it up the the green port in the engine bay (after removing the Schrader valve)? Turn it on and look for leaks?

I thought I saw that you have to turn on (or off) a valve and block off a clean air hose at the charcoal canister?

Any tips?

(Holy cow does this thing produce smoke! I was testing it and had to turn it off because I was smoking out the neighbors, lol.)

It's been a while since I've smoke tested the evap system for those codes but on my 2002 I tested from the gas tank & charcoal canister following the fsm steps. You may already know this but the charcoal canister for 01-02 is located behind the gas tank. I don't remember the specific YouTube videos I watched but I think a couple of them were from fix it angle. If you type in Toyota p0440 the videos should come up. I do remember using a 9v battery to open/close the vsv to check for proper function. Those steps were also outlined in the fsm. My fix turned out to be a small leak in the overfill check valve (pn 77390-35010) on top of the gas tank.

Yep, I read a few of your threads on this, very informative, thanks. I was hoping to short circuit testing a bit to get an idea whether we're talking tank/filler tube or canister area.

The one vid I saw on youtube, the guy was working on a 3.4L Tacoma and used the green port...but I wasn't sure if he had to twaddle the VSV there or not. He had a Bi-Directional scanner that was able to actuate all the valves at will...and I don't have that piece of wizardry. Once his smoke machine was hooked up...it pointed him directly where he needed to go.
