Sniv's Custom Long Travel Build

:snacker:

Nothing has changed haha, I might mess with it (Runner) in the summer. Here is my life since the last post summed up:

His thread.
He's earned it by way of hard knocks.
I have yet to read any thread with as much hard core wheeling and DIY repair as Snivolous.
He's a resource worth having for Runners or FJs.

That FJ is ****ing awesome dude !

Thanks man! It's fun, but definitely lacks in a few departments like going over 50mph or having a stereo or not being deafening or having a decent heater or.... Makes me consider doing an ultra cheap and quick fix on the Runner this summer and going back to using the FJ as a weekend cruiser, since dailying a carbureted tank is sometimes annoying haha

Did you ever find out where you were leaking coolant?

No, I literally didn't even look at it besides moving it in the yard after I got back from school last year. I'm assuming the water pump is leaking or something fairly simple like that, but who knows :noidea: Like 15 gallons of coolant over 10 hours, and then it didn't lose ANY for the last 50 miles or so after I got off I-70 and it didn't feel like it had any change in power and there wasn't any white smoke or stuff coming out the exhaust... So all that makes me think it's just puking from somewhere and the guts of the engine are fine and it's relatively simple. Guess I'll find out this summer! Maybe... :D

Some cool pictures popped up on my Facebook and I realized I had never posted them here. I also got to reading the last couple pages on here, and found an interesting quote I said:

I'm also either losing, or burning coolant since I seem to be losing some a lot. At one point at a gas station it looked like I was leaking from somewhere all over the drivers side suspension, but didn't see it leaking anywhere and it didn't happen again. This would seem like a blown head gasket, but the engine doesn't feel like it has low compression, so I'm hoping I'm just leaking from a hose or something for the coolant.

Which either coincidentally, or subconsciously, matches up exactly with the symptoms of coolant loss I was experiencing on the last time I drove the runner (from UT to CO about 11 months ago). At a minimum this will give me a starting point to look for what's wrong with the engine/coolant system assuming compression checks out.

I have a lot of plans (as usual) over the summer, but between moving home in ~4 weeks and then business trips and family trips in May, I'm thinking of pulling the runner into the garage then and doing a (hopefully) quick maintenance/mod session to get it fixed and driving well. But we'll see... As for the photos I came across I never posted for some reason:

Until next time, hopefully it's working on the runner since I'm getting a bad itch to have it moving again... :D

Sounds like it could be the oil cooler line or the oil cooler itself leaking. It's on the driver's side of the engine. Mine was pretty shot when I did my water pump last January, so I replaced it.

I tend to not linger on posts too long, but I enjoyed this one. I won't ever get to a LT build since it beyond what I'll ever need, but I do dream of customization for my own purposes, and this allowed me to do so, even if for only an hour or two.

Cant wait to see this working again. Im fighting the urge to dive into the world of long travel.

I encourage you to dive in! Even with my setup that has had more issues than probably any other and isn't even tuned right, I've had a blast!

I have a question. Can you simply use tundra cv axles when you have LT?

Lots of places sell stronger/modified tundra axles, and I've read of people modifying stock ones so the CV joint can articulate more (which I think is what Total Chaos does with their axles, simply put). From pictures I've seen it looks like my suspension has less down travel but more up travel than Total Chaos or other kits, and I know at full droop my CVs aren't happy, so I can see it necessary to run the upgraded axles. Mine are 100% stock from O'reilly and the suspension is just setup so that it cycles the axle within its stock capabilities (though I obviously modified the frame to move my suspension travel region higher, most kits don't utilize a lot of the potential up travel left in the CV from the looks of it). At least all that is what I think is happening, though I've never actually looked at a LT 3rd gen/Taco up close before so it's all assumptions I've made.
